Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Checkmate 260532

We all have them, especially in today's day and age.  Is multi-tasking, a good idea? NO WAY.  Try this test: Count to 26.  Say your ABCs.  Pretty simple, right? It took me 7.58 seconds to do my ABCs and 11.56 to count to 26.  Now put them together.  1A 2B 3C...all the way through.  Takes much longer than the accumulated 19.14 seconds.  You may argue that you have to think harder, and you would be right.  You do have to think harder, just like you have to think harder when you are multitasking.  SAME THING!

When you are multi-tasking you are distracted. You may think you are really good at it, however, you are distracted and you are not giving 100% to either thing you are doing.  If you would just drop one of the tasks, and focus 100% on one task, you will complete it faster and with more accuracy and focus.  Focus being the key work here.

I have learned over the years, that if I have a project due, I need to sit in front of it and work on just that project.  If I do this, I can bang it out in no time.  If I'm in the office and people start talking to me, or my phone rings, I'm toast.  It takes me double the time.  I start going down rabbit holes.  Just the other day this happened to me.  I had a very detailed email I needed to complete.  I was asked a question from my assistant, then one of my agents asked me something, it was 30 minutes later when I looked at my computer screen and realized I hadn't even finished my email.  DISTRACTIONS!

We have a sign we put on our door that lets other agents in the office know when we are not available.  It's a distraction free zone.  Just don't knock.  Just sayin....

Hello Cindy - each of us finds ways to meet life's distractions.  They are a part of daily living.

Multi-tasking used to be "the" thing to do. But I've found the same thing - if I allocate time to just focus on one thing, and can stay focused, I get a lot more done.

Good morning, Cindy... I've long said that multi-tasking is not effective. I'm one of those people who likes to concentrate hard on one thing at a time. I find I get more done.

Good point, Cindy. And studies have shown that multi-tasking doesn't work...we're fooling ourselves if we think we can. People often say they can multi-task but not really.

Good morning Cindy. Must say learning to "focus" and avoid "distractions" is a daily chore. And, some days are better than others. Enjoy your day.

Hi Cindy - I remember in the 1990's that companies where using words like more with less and multitasking.  That did not work out. It is really FOCUS that is needed.

Preach it!!!
I've been posting for years that multi-tasking is a myth we fool our rapid brains into thinking is the sign of a productive person. The master craftsmen, the hunters, the artists know- FOCUS! You can't sand and paint at the same time, you can't hunt deer and quail at the same time, you can't play two instruments...ugh....well Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen actually blow this point for me, but you see where I'm going LOL.

I totally agree Cindy and have been practicing and teaching this for many years. Focusing on the task at hand is key!

Multi-tasking makes me good at nothing.

I partially do one thing, then move to then next and never get the original IMPORTANT task done to completion.

Multi-tasking may work when the tasks are trivial but something important needs 100% focus and attention

Hi Cindy:

Excellent advice here! I bet most people think they can easily manage multiple tasks simultaneously when the reality is something very different.

I also heard that when multi tasking it takes much longer for you to refocus on the different projects or things you are working on too. Great post, and a reminder to stay focused.

I use to multi-task because it was thing everyone was talking about but I soon found staying focused on one task got it done quicker and I could move easily to another one. Like your message today!
