National Mutt Day: July 31
Today is the 17th anniversary of National Mutt Day in Charlotte (and everywhere else for that matter). Also known as Mixed Breed Dog Day, National Mutt Day was created in 2005 by animal welfare advocate, Colleen Paige, to raise awareness of the plight of mixed breed dogs in shelters all over the country and to educate the public about the millions of mixed breed dogs desperately awaiting their "fur-ever" homes.
National Mutt Day, is the perfect day to visit your local shelter and adopt a mixed breed dog. My dogs have all been mixed breeds. All came from our local shelters in the Charlotte area. There's never been the slightest doubt in my mind that they have been the most loving, smartest, and healthiest dogs we've owned. But I wouldn't want anyone to think I'm biased! When people would ask what our dogs' breeds are, my answer has always been "a pedigree mutt." I guess you could call me an Official Mutt Lover!
WHY MUTTS ARE GREAT DOGS TO ADOPT
There are great benefits to choosing a Mutt over a purebred dog and one of the most important ones is longevity. Mixed breed dogs tend to live longer and have healthier lives than purebreds. Pure-breed dogs can be prone to certain breed-specific diseases. Mutts are often healthier because they have a more diverse gene pool than pure-breeds. Genes from one specific breed can cancel out disease-causing genes in another. The result is a healthier dog which lives longer. I've seen it first-hand... our mixed breed, Gracie, lived a very healthy life to the age of 15. Now, we have Bingo, who is as smart and sweet and healthy as they come! And I expect to share many happy years with him.
