August Challenge: The Amazing Fish Story! Salmon Migration

"It's a Salmon Run! Time To Go Home." -- Chinook Salmon

The upriver salmon migration is one of nature's most mysterious dramas. To some species of Pacific salmon, it is a long, strenuous, desperate race against time, with every obstacle taking a toll. The journey is an example of phenomenal effort. Perseverance.

Pacific salmon may swim hundreds or thousands of miles to their birthplace to spawn. This genetic perseverance keeps them fighting upriver to return to their spawning grounds and repeats.

The circle of life and death takes mental toughness. First, they must survive their years in the ocean, staying safe amid commercial fishers, natural predators, and storms. Only the strongest survive by swimming against the swift current and leaping over steep waterfalls.

Second, the male must fight off other males at the spawning grounds to keep them from his female of choice. The female covers her eggs with silt and stands watch for several hours or days.

Finally, she lays her eggs, and the male deposits his sperm over them. The salmon turn into brilliant colors and die within a few days of spawning from injuries and exhaustion. Young salmon develop a great sense of smell of their home water as they grow into adulthood.

Each year from May to September, adult salmon begin their epic journey from their birth rivers and streams toward the ocean. Depending on specific species, salmon spend one to seven years in the sea.

Research has discovered that the same adult salmon return to their birthplace using the Earth's magnetic field to navigate the migration process. Those that survive will spawn and die, and this migration process begins the salmon life cycle.

Let this great video captivate you. It's about the incredible journey of salmon migration. Enjoy!

'I think we're going to the moon because it's in the nature of the human being to face all challenges. It's by the nature of his deep inner soul... We're required to do these things just as salmon swim upstream." -- Neil Armstrong

Like salmon, many of us possess an "innate ability to persevere through the difficulty and adversity at all cost."

Some who may have written a failure resume tend to give up amidst the difficulty.

There is no circumvention of life's struggles. It is not the absence of effort and difficulty that constitutes peace; it is strength and resolve that ensures that you will emerge victoriously. As a man thinks in his heart, so he is...

"Perseverance is not a long race; it is many short races one after the other." – Walter Elliot.

Hi, Paddy Deighan MBA JD PhD.

Indeed, they are amazing animals. I've written about butterflies, and now you mentioned hummingbirds. Inspiration comes in many forms and ways. A simple comment can trigger thoughts and curiousities that lead to researching and learning. Thank you for your comment.

I believe "perseverance" is your real name, period! It's what you think and practice which leads to your apparent success. Be an Atlantic salmon as they come back and do it again, time after time, whereas Pacific salmon don't return and go home to die.

We need you back! 😊

Hello, Candace Russell Torres

We went to Alaska during our honeymoon and spent three weeks exploring in our RV. I remember fishing from the shore till 11 pm since this was June, and the daylights were long. At some point, our dinner was based on catching a salmon or going on a crash diet! Then we discovered oysters on the beach. What a paradise!

I am happy to meet someone from Alaska. Thank you for sharing the salmon experience. Fascinating!

Hey, Carol Williams

I am glad to see you commenting; that means you're sitting at your computer!

The dam issue has always been a concern to many residents. We see fewer salmon because humans often are the obstacles to this wildlife.

What animal analogy should I use next?

Hi Aura,
How about lions? They represent courage, among other things.
Or how about birds? We can learn a lot from birds.

Carol Williams - Ok, lions next. Birds, yes, many birds are in my interest. Someone mentioned hummingbird. I'll get busy on these. Thanks a million!

Hello, Dorte Engel

I agree that we see fewer salmon spawning due to river and stream drought. I can remember vividly seeing salmon taking their last breath. Their brilliant colors and eggs spread around rocks give me a dose of reality of how Nature works and why it's important to pay attention and learn about other beings sharing this Earth with us.

Hi, faye schubert

I agree with your comment. It's fascinating to learn about species essential to humans and other species. Every life has a cycle.

A sense of hope for the salmon to complete their journey? For me, it was a feeling of still unanswered to the mystery of this epic journey.

Hello, Robert (outside visitor sent an email).

There are five species of Pacific salmon: Coho, Chinook, Pink, Sockeye, and Chum.

Atlantic salmon are larger and from the Atlantic ocean. Pacific salmon are from the Pacific Ocean (west coast). Have I lost you yet?

You write such beautiful posts! Salmon are abundant here in Alaska. This year seems to be record breaking.  We live in a state where we do respect the wildlife in every way. Salmon are still running, and life is good!

Come Winter we have Winter King Salmon! Very Delicious!

Thank you!

Thank you for the kind words, Debra Leisek. You're lucky that the beloved Salmon are abundant in Alaska.

I love King salmon the best, and we can't get enough of it. Wild-caught Sockeye salmon is more available where we are in the Olympic Peninsula, and it's hard to find Coho. Chum Salmon are nearly or already extinct in WA.

You can trust me for all your real estate needs!

Thanks for the analogy this morning. It seems the market has shifted greatly in the past few months and there are going to be some agent who get washed up and cannot persevere. But for those who can and do it will be fruitful.

Interestingly, I have noticed the slower pace in the Midwest market too. I talked to a client in Cleveland, OH, and learned a few things about how he will tackle the change.

You already recognize the situation, and I wish you the best. Thank you for being here.
