January of 2022 my son/his family and I made a decision we were going to reconnect with a dear friend of mine, who was a huge part of my son and daughter’s life growing up; we always referred to her as their God Mother.
Vicki and I met when our husbands were flying in the Navy, in Beeville TX and in the same squadron. My daughter was born there so Vicki has known her since she was 6 months old. Vicki is from Montana and grew up on a 40,000 acre ranch along the Canadian border by Glacier Park. They rented lake homes during the summer on Whitefish Lake so she grew up swimming, boating, fishing, hiking, enjoying all Mother Nature had to offer.
We have always wanted to see Montana so after I reconnected with Vicki in San Diego last fall we plotted to visit Montana this summer! My son, his family (which includes Handsome Hudson and Beautiful Beckett) and I booked flights and his wife Erika found the perfect VRBO on Lake Whitefish!
Vicki set up a fishing trip with her favorite guide on Flathead Lake for us. My son booked another fishing day for him and Handsome Hudson. They both love to fish and have fished together in Florida, Colorado, Costa Rico and many places in Texas. Handsome Hudson loves to fish. He exhibits patience, has learned all about the fish he fishes for and has some experience under his belt at almost 10 years old.
Beautiful Beckett is feisty and not afraid of a challenge or new experiences. As you know this past spring she played on an all boy basket ball team and often when playing other teams was the only girl on the court. Never fazed her, she just played, earned the respect of her teammates and played ball!
When we came aboard, Cameron, our guide showed everyone the workings of his boat and explained the Navionics Sonar Chart to Beckett (Hudson was already familiar with it). He set the reels and explained the rules of engagement and how the afternoon would unfold.

Beckett was really excited and right away told Hudson they were going to bet on who caught the biggest fish! He gladly accepted the challenge and agreed if she won he would buy her a giant size snickers bar with his own money. If he won she would buy him 2 strings of candy he liked with her money. A shake of hands and game on!
Hudson caught the first fish and it was a big one! Beckett was not discouraged but eager to land her own. Hudson caught another one and then Beckett had a bite! It was a big one and in reeling it in she reeled too fast and it got away. Very disappointing because it looked even bigger than Hudson’s fish!

Hudson caught another one and then Beckett had a bite. She reeled in slower and Cameron got it with a net. She ran over to see if it was bigger than Hudson’s…..nope but was a nice size trout. She lost another one and then caught another and another and so did Hudson.

At the end of the day they made a good haul but Hudson was the clear winner. At first Beckett claimed she had the biggest one but it got away. Cameron has three kids of his own so he said to Beckett: “Are you going to welch on your bet?” She looked at him and said: What’s that? He looked her in the eyes and said “not honor your bet.” She looked away and plopped down on a seat and said “fine...I’ll pay up!” We all told her that was the Beckett we knew and she moved on reluctantly after a minute or two.
Life offers many lessons. Her bet and loosing was a good one to have when you're almost 8. You have to learn "your word is your bond."
