Today's Food For Thought: Important Life Lessons The Smallest Bird On Earth Can Teach Us

"As long as the hummingbird had not abandoned the land, somewhere there were still flowers, and they could all go on."- Leslie Marmon Silko.

The animal kingdom can teach us many things. From trusting your instincts to being truthful – our furry (and not so furry) friends are often wiser than us.

This time we look at hummingbirds – one of the world's most fascinating creatures.

Do you know that there are over 300 species of hummingbirds? The smallest hummingbirds on earth are the Bee Hummingbirds

In life, there are many paths.

Most of us have learned one of the most critical lessons: life is not a straight path. There are ebbs and flows, which is entirely normal. Hummingbirds fly forward, side to side, backward, and, surprisingly, even upside down.

Thanks to their skill, they can navigate the world like any other bird or animal. As humans, we can do the same.

Setting a goal and sitting back will not get you there; choosing a path wisely will.

Don't let anyone hold you back.

Hummingbirds are tiny in size, but don't let that fool you. Instead of their small stature being a limitation, they use it to their advantage. They can move around in several ways. Unlike other birds, hummingbirds can be particularly fast, flying to 30 mph and diving up to 60 mph.

Use this as an inspiration! Instead of focusing on your flaws or weaknesses, try to capitalize on your strengths. Nobody is perfect.

Be who you are.

Hummingbirds are tiny creatures, but you'd be surprised to learn how aggressive they can be when threatened. It will fight to protect its territory.

If somebody takes something of yours or offends you, know when to stand your ground! Be who you are.

When you believe in who you are, you have deep-down peace of mind because you are honest at the most basic level. It gives you courage when you act from the place of your deepest self.

Make the most of every opportunity.

While hummingbirds are not giant creatures in nature, they have a huge appetite and eat 77 times more than the average human. Fascinating, isn't it?

Now, the lesson we should take from hummingbirds being big eaters is that we should have an appetite for learning and growing. Be hungry!

You won't always be able to do what you enjoy or love, and some tasks in life are dull and challenging. Still, approach life with quiet confidence. Don't let opportunities that resonate with you fly by. Seize them.

There is a lot we can learn from hummingbirds. With their courageous hearts and efficient way of living, they are a great role model for us humans.

Aura, what an awesome post, we have orange, lemon and tangerine trees in our back yard... initially we had a humming bird feeder too and then realized no need they have fun just going to the trees and getting their nourishments.... what I thought was fascinating that they always traveled in pairs. Reminded me of human couples:) Endre

If you look carefully at those trees, you might find their tiny nests. If one of the birds has no colors, it's probably a female, and the male is usually an attractive one with gorgeous colors.

Now, what's wrong with this picture? Why does Nature give male animals all the perks? LOL!!

Hi, Grant Schneider. Sometimes, it's the little thing in life that means so much. I love that hummingbirds can travel alone and fly for thousand miles to their new home. Some people would rather feel trapped and sit still rather than stepping out of their comfort zone to explore.

These little birds go about their day, day after day, being the smallest bird. They offer so much without trying to impress humans, just being themselves. Less is more applies here. Thank you for your read and comment.

I had no idea there were over 300 species of hummingbirds.  I do know in my area, there are hummingbirds that look almost identical, but some have metallic green chests, while others have vivid purple chests, and still others have chests of other colors.

Thank you so much for the feature.

Hummingbirds have frustrated scientists who have studied them for years. Studies said they used to be in Europe and Asia, and now they live only in the Americas (mainly South America). So, the questions were how did they fly to South America? Or, how did they get to Europe if they originated in South America?

On top of that, there are so many different species of hummingbirds, over 300. That probably explains the different colors of the birds you have been seeing. Have I lost you yet? 😍 Me, no bird expert!!

Greetings Aura:

Naturally, I'm late to the party.

Hummers are fascinating little creatures.   I mean, really fascinating.   If you could beat your wings a gazillion times a minute, you'd have a fairly large appetite, too.    (A relative did label me a human garbage pail as a kid.)

I wonder how they evolved as birds on crack, while other birds appear to be on tranquilizers by comparison.   Some species have super long beaks, you'd think they'd need a runway to lift off, but they're still extraordinarily nimble.   Maybe we should make airplanes out of Hummer beaks?

There is indeed lots to be inspired by.

You haven't disappointed me when it comes to your words. I had no choice but to ponder.

Birds on crack? What kind of cracks do you think hummers need to beat their wings a gazillion times a minute? Your kid relative was probably jealous of you with a huge appetite!

We might not find beaks long and strong enough to make airplanes out of; how' bout this guy! Meet the new Sheriff Patrol in town!

Dear Aura,

Hummingbirds are cool to look at and observe, but I am a little wary of them. They do not seem to like redheads. I have been attacked by multiple birds, who were going after my hair. Not sure why.

Hi, Dorte Engel.

I once read about bees attracted to red hair because of the red hair's color resemblance to bright flowers. This could be a similar reason why birds attack your hair. Sorry to hear about bad experience.

Never have problems with bees. I have around 20 species in my yard.
