Searcy AR Revisit

The lady on the right above is Betty Mason Martin and she lived in Searcy way back in about 1947.  Her memories of Searcy are quite favorable except for one so she just paid us a visit.  She now lives in Virginia, drove to Arkansas, and had a visit with old friends from her childhood.  Mary Kay VanPatten James is shown with her in the above picture.

The bad memory is of her father's death.  Her father, Lester Mason, was superintendent of Searcy Public Schools.  Her mother,
Alice, was a teacher of music and was choir director at a local church.  Mr. Mason was driving home from Bald Knob on what is now Hwy 13 By-Pass.  There was a big bridge across the river (it has now been replaced) that he had to cross and for some reason he did not make it across and he died in the accident.  She was about 7 years old but remembers it.  After a few more years in Searcy, her mother moved Betty and her sister, Gloria, to another city.  I had heard of the tragic death and have become known because of my blogs and over 40 years in the real estate business.  Her old friends called on me for help.

She decided to visit!  Even though I did not live here then, I enjoyed driving her around to see old places that she remembered from her childhood in Searcy.

Thanks for coming, Betty Mason Martin!!

That's great, Barbara. Thanks for posting. I did not know Betty but I did her sister, Gloria. We are facebook friends.

This posting reminds me of the social listing in the Searcy Citizen. We kept track of the comings and goings of Searcy citizens through this article. Betty's would read something like this:

Betty Mason Martin formerly of Searcy visited Searcy recently. She currently lives in Virginia and enjoyed a visit with her friend Mary Kay Vanpatten James as they toured familiar places in Searcy.

I love that wording, Don.  She was a fun person to meet.
