Where Are They?

Where are the Cicadas?

Where are the Katydids?

It’s mid August here in southeastern Pennsylvania and not a peep from a daytime cicada, nor the harmonies from the nighttime katydids.

We just had a 10 day heatwave, that didn’t even pull them out.

They are the lovers of hot weather.

They are the chorus to help us through.

They are the sound, the music of the dog days of summer.

Where are they?

I miss them.

Are they annual insects? I thought they only came out every so often.

It must seem quiet!

Wasn't last year the invasion of Cicadas? Maybe they are resting. 😊

Kat Palmiotti Yes these are annual cicadas  that are part seasonal bugs around here, not the ones that swarm every 17 years.  We seem to miss the 17 year swarms.

Carol Williams Those 17 year cicadas are now asleep for another 16 years.  These are a cousin of theirs. These come out every year, not in swarms, but are ever present with their loud sounds.  They get louder as the temps rise.  A sound of this part of the state.  The cicada killers are out in force but no cicadas.

They are very cool creatures and may make an appearance every 2-5 years. The periodical ones every 13-17 years, Gloria.
