National Check The Chip Day: August 15 (Don't Lose Your Pets)

NATIONAL CHECK THE CHIP DAY: AUGUST 15

It's National Check the Chip Day today! If you've got a cat or dog at home who's been micro-chipped, today is the day to make sure the chip works. If your pets are not micro-chipped today is the day to seriously consider getting them chipped.

Micro-chipping greatly helps in reuniting missing pets with their owners. Did you know that every two seconds a family pet is lost, with only one in ten ever being found?  80 million US households have a pet. One in three pets are lost in their lifetime. Almost 10 MILLION dogs and cats are lost or stolen each year. That's 14% of dogs and 15% of cats.  Cat owners were less likely to find their cat. Just 74% of lost cats are recovered, while 93% of lost dogs are recovered.

Did you know:

  • Dogs are 2.5 times more likely to be returned to their owners if they are chipped.

  • Cats are 21.4 times more likely to be returned to their owners if they are chipped.

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 hi Sheila... I've never lost a pet and just can't imagine how I'd feel if I did. And yet... I see posts all the time on Nextdoor and Facebook from people whose pets have gotten loose and disappeared.

Leanne Smith same here, Leanne... for both my shelter adopted dog and cat. But many people don't get their pets from a shelter and never micro-chip their pets. I think virtually all shelters now automatically micro-chip before they adopt out a dog or cat.

Grant Schneider hi Grant... I've had totally indoor cats who were not micro-chipped, but never a dog. My cat now is micro-chipped because I adopted him from a shelter and they automatically micro-chip all dogs and cats.

I will never understand why all pet owners do not chip their fur babies. I am on a few FB rescue groups. The first thing they do is scan for a chip. When the pet is chipped most of the time it is reunited with the owner. Nina Hollander, Broker

Carol Williams hi Carol... since we are so careful with out pets, it always amazes me how many people lose their pets. At least with a micro-chip the odds go way up to find them.

I have a friend who is convinced her Westie was nabbed. She was heartbroken and went on all the sites to report her lost. As it turns out, the people returned her. She thinks because the dog has a very sensitive digestive system and they probably didn't like cleaning up after her.

Carol Williams there are always stories like that. With all the natural disasters we've had, I know micro-chipped animals were reunited way faster with their owners.

Kathleen Daniels, Probate & Trust Specialist hi Kathleen... the statistics speak for themselves... micro-chip your cat and the odds of recovering it go up 21.4 times; micro-chip your dog and the odds of recovery increase 2.5 times. Seems like a good reason to do it.

Nina, Lucy and Izzi both came from the Dumb Friends League, and they neuter and chip every pet before adoption.

We no longer have any pets, but we had our pets chipped when we had them.  It would be so sad to loose our little friends.

Joan Cox hi Joan... the shelters do that now, but they didn't used to and there are plenty of people who get their pets from a place other than a shelter. Our first dogs from a shelter many years ago were not micro-chipped. But Bingo was.

George Souto hi George... I do believe there's been talk of that... but let's face it, micro-chipping humans is somewhat Orwellian.

Nina Hollander, Broker - Although I don't have pets, this is really good information to share! I know a lot of people who have pets and I'll pass the information on. You are such a great advocate for dogs and cats.

Interestingly enough, I was just thinking about this topic last evening.  I have two cats.  One stays in the house exclusively, but his little sister is a little more adventurous.  I need to get her chipped!

Myrl Jeffcoat hi Myrl... the good news is that these days if you adopt from most shelters cats and dogs are not only spayed and neutered but also chipped before you can take them home.
