Are you Working at 50%

By
Real Estate Agent with Golden Girls with SW Desert Homes BR564219000

I received an email today that asked me if I was working with half a mind.  I chuckled, wondering as I prepped dinner for later, if I even utilized HALF my mind, or my brain power.  I know our brains are miraculous and underused, according to scientists.

I clicked on the email as it was selling a book, and it did go on to say that in one study, our minds are usually "wandering" about 46% of the time.

I got to thinking about real estate.  There are days when I am working 6 hours straight without a break, stop to eat, and jump right back into it for another 6.  It's the nature of the business. Others...I'm in pajamas till 11, perhaps writing blog posts and reading others.

I've found for the most part that down time is creative time.  The what-if, what-should-we-do-next time where I examine my prospecting, marketing, and keeping in touch routines.

Because in MY mind, if I'm only doing a routine...it becomes a routine. And I love the freedom that being self-employed brings to a demanding career.

In the book, “Smarter, Faster, Better,” Charles Duhigg mentions that researchers have found that determined and focused people tend to work harder and get tasks done more promptly. They often have higher paying jobs, have deeper networks of friends, and stay married longer.

WHEW!  I guess they are talking generalities.  I see the modifiers, "tend to work harder" and "often have higher paying..."

As I think more about how this pertains to real estate, I think about the current real estate market.  The headlines.  The fear mongering.  The predictions.

Real estate is national: Every local market is unique.
Everyone has a brain:  We are all wired in our own amazing way.

I could go really deep and delve into "What is success" but for the sake of concise-ness, won't right now.

I believe it's important to focus on our clients, build our pipeline, and grow our business -- should those be our goals.  But I also believe after 17 successful years of a career I LOVE, that down time, or imaginary time can be fruitful in fueling our at least 50% working brain time.

Want to know more about our unique, personal, LOCAL market - please contact me.  You'll have 100% of my attention.  After all, I love my job.

I answer more "chicken Little" inspired questions than ever.  I need a banner to fly over my office that says: "No, the sky is not falling down and we are not in a recession"  end of rant for today.

Hi Cara I've always been a believer in 'down time' as you call it to let the mind wander and let creativity do it's magic.  Focus is key to success!

I've had some of my best ideas while on vacation, or while out doing something non-work related. So I totally agree we need to use those "down" times creatively.

Vacation...floating in the pool...even taking a bath.  When the mind is at "rest" our thoughts are free to fly!!

Hi Cara,
Your post reminded me how ridiculous it is that people think they are being so productive when they are multitasking. It is when we focus on one thing that we are most productive. Get that done and move on.

Yes.  There are a lot of articles out there now about the ineffectiveness of multi-tasking.  We spend too much time figuring out where we were in the other projects that we save...nothing.  Thanks for stopping by Carol Williams

Wandering time is good time - and it does sometimes produce exciting ideas. Multi-tasking is, I think, OK when the tasks don't require much thought. I'm thinking of pulling weeds, peeling potatoes, etc.

Good morning Cara. "Think time" is an important part of my day and before I retired it was the hardest task to get to. Not wise. Enjoy your day.

Good morning Cara,

Focus is always the key to success but we need down time to think and be creative as it always produces some new ways to look at things or some new ideas. Michael Jacobs is the "King of Pondering" which is what more of us should spend time doing!

Hi Carla:

Focusing on the tasks we need to accomplish and avoiding distractions is important, but downtime to rejuvenate is essential too, and will likely improve our overall efficiency. Duhigg's book sounds like a good one - I'll have to check it out.

Real estate is not an easy business, and the rewards are well deserved.  We all work at our own pace but the reality of it is we need to devote 100% of our attention to the client we are looking at.

Cara Marcelle Mancuso

Ed Silva - it is true our clients like to be our total focus.  That gets challenging when we are juggling many simultaneously.  I try to be most things to all people, but it isn't always possible.  That's when managing expectations comes in handy.  Have a client-filled week!

Very well said!   It's helpful if clients realize that 1) you are working with several pp at a time, in various stages of selling/buying and 2) you have a personal life and events you plan to attend.   The "down" time is productive in one way or another, letting your mind wander, relaxing, thinking about an issue that needs attention, etc.
