Jet Pilots don't use Rear Views Mirrors

pilotJet Pilots do not use REAR VIEW MIRRORS!

I am always amazed how people look back and dwell in the past.

Do you know, that jet pilots are always looking ahead to get to where they are going.  They are always striving to be on time and trying to please everyone.

So why is it that too often we all look back and complain about this or that and fixate on "if only".   The thing is, we should all have goals to look forward to, be more positive, and find only good things to talk about.

It's like watching the news at night.  They always have plenty to report on and most of it is bad.  I like to keep up on what has happened in the world, but I wish some of the stories talked about the great things that happened and not just the murders, accidents, economic disaster, weather catastrophes, and such.

Do you think that things would be better if he did not have rear view mirrors?   Wish I was a jet pilot!

How about you?

We should be more positive - and look at what is good in the world.  Unfortunately it is typically something negative that makes the news.  I remember when they used to always end a news broadcast with a positive story.  We need to have more of that in our life.

My wife always fixates on what’s going on behind our car. She misses exits all the time watching what’s behind instead of what she’s about to hit or miss 🤪

Along with others who have mentioned drivers and rear view mirrors I've always been baffled by those obsessed about the distance a car is following behind them... and then the really stupid ones hit the brakes and cause the collision saying it was the other drivers fault. Shear stupidity.

Hi Will,
I read somewhere that kids hear 400 negative words a day, and it takes 5 - 7 positive comments to counteract the negative.  Negativity causes anxiety. No wonder we have so much mental illness these days. We need to change that statistic. That's one of the reasons I limit the time I spend watching the news.  As I tell people, I try to stay informed without getting overwhelmed.

From earliest childhood, people are negatively conditions because parents want to keep children safe and young children do not understand long complete sentences. No works very well. Unfortunately, negative conditioning takes root in the subconscious.  Looking forward with this subconscious negative conditioning has a very dirty window while the sideview mirror is relatively clean because often the past looks better than the future.

Good morning Will. I would be satisfied if the news were accurately and objectively reported. If I want their opinion I will ask. And as for the rear view mirror, the hard part is separating the facts from the fiction. Enjoy your day.

Good morning Will Hamm ,

I'm so glad that Carol Williams featured your post on her Second Chance Saturday Series as I missed it. What a great analogy! I too wish the news would focus on some good things that are happening instead of all the negative and innuendos.

Hi, Will.

Thank you for this post.

We can't change others and wish they'd do what we like, and we can only change ourselves by not listening to negative thoughts. The action takes us where we want to go, not "wishful thinking."

Great analogy!

Hi Will:

Great advice here. It's easy to fall back on "could've, should've, would've" rather than a focus on moving forward.
