OK OK. This may sound like a FISH STORY to you, but I jumped off the top of a telephone pole and lived to tell this story!
You may think I am nuts to even conceive and tell this story, but it TRUE. Yes, it involved a DARE to which I responded to. No, DARES are generally not a good idea but in this case it was pretty awesome!
Now....for the rest of the story....
It was in the Summer of the mid 1990s along the Pecos Rive in Sante Fe New Mexico.
My company had booked a group team building session at the Pecos River Learning Center. There were the typical events you may have heard of like a TRUST Fall backwards into the arms of your teammates and blind folded TRUST Walks through open terrain just touching the elbow of a teammate (no talking guidance) just trust by the movement of your team mates elbow to walk through gullies, over logs and through and around bushes and forest growth. These were all interesting and great and involved a DARE to TRUST and certainly did help build the trust in the people you work with...your teammates.
However....there was the TELEPHONE POLE!
This photo is not me, but I did the same thing (You Tube)
The objective, is to climb to the top of the telephone pole and to take that last precarious step on up to the top of the telephone pole with just "air" above and once up on top of the pole turn around 360 degrees with little baby steps while the telephone pole is rocking and wavering in the wind. THEN... to JUMP OFF and on the way down grab a rope with a Bell and ring it as you are falling. I DID IT! ....and my teammates encouraged me on (which was the point).
You Tube of TELEPHONE POLE Climb and the actual JUMP moment similar to what I accomplished
Yes, we were connected to pulleys and ropes so even if I did fall before I jumped off the top I would have been safely brought back to earth. However it was above my normal comfort zone for sure and rocking back and forth in the wind after taking that last difficult step to reach the top of the telephone call was scary and at the same time exhilarating. Taking those baby steps to turn around while standing on top of the pole with nothing to hold on to was a very eery feeling to say the least.
I do not have a picture of me actually doing it, that I can still find at the moment. We used film cameras back in those days. However the pictures and You Tube video provided here are of someone doing the similar thing without the 360 degree walk around at the top, but you can get the idea.
The message for the telephone pole climb and jump for us was, "If you DO what you have always DONE, you will GET what you always GOT"! Try something new.
Now, when you are taking a dare it may not be a good idea to jump off a telephone pole. However, buying or selling a home can be scary also. Now that is where I come in to guide you every step of the way. Real Estate made easy with me and HomeSmart. Give me a call. I guarantee it will be better than climbing a telephone call and with a HAPPY LANDING or Home!
