Would you Jump off TOP of a Telephone Pole? I Did!

OK OK. This may sound like a FISH STORY to you, but I jumped off the top of a telephone pole and lived to tell this story!

You may think I am nuts to even conceive and tell this story, but it TRUE. Yes, it involved a DARE to which I responded to. No, DARES are generally not a good idea but in this case it was pretty awesome!

Now....for the rest of the story....

It was in the Summer of the mid 1990s along the Pecos Rive in Sante Fe New Mexico.

My company had booked a group team building session at the Pecos River Learning Center. There were the typical events you may have heard of like a TRUST Fall backwards into the arms of your teammates and blind folded TRUST Walks through open terrain just touching the elbow of a teammate (no talking guidance) just trust by the movement of your team mates elbow to walk through gullies, over logs and through and around bushes and forest growth. These were all interesting and great and involved a DARE to TRUST and certainly did help build the trust in the people you work with...your teammates.

However....there was the TELEPHONE POLE!

Telephone Pole Jump

This photo is not me, but I did the same thing (You Tube)

The objective, is to climb to the top of the telephone pole and to take that last precarious step on up to the top of the telephone pole with just "air" above and once up on top of the pole turn around 360 degrees with little baby steps while the telephone pole is rocking and wavering in the wind. THEN... to JUMP OFF and on the way down grab a rope with a Bell and ring it as you are falling. I DID IT! ....and my teammates encouraged me on (which was the point).

Telephone Pole Jump from top

You Tube of TELEPHONE POLE Climb and the actual JUMP moment similar to what I accomplished

Yes, we were connected to pulleys and ropes so even if I did fall before I jumped off the top I would have been safely brought back to earth. However it was above my normal comfort zone for sure and rocking back and forth in the wind after taking that last difficult step to reach the top of the telephone call was scary and at the same time exhilarating. Taking those baby steps to turn around while standing on top of the pole with nothing to hold on to was a very eery feeling to say the least.

I do not have a picture of me actually doing it, that I can still find at the moment. We used film cameras back in those days. However the pictures and You Tube video provided here are of someone doing the similar thing without the 360 degree walk around at the top, but you can get the idea.

The message for the telephone pole climb and jump for us was, "If you DO what you have always DONE, you will GET what you always GOT"! Try something new.

Now, when you are taking a dare it may not be a good idea to jump off a telephone pole. However, buying or selling a home can be scary also. Now that is where I come in to guide you every step of the way. Real Estate made easy with me and HomeSmart. Give me a call. I guarantee it will be better than climbing a telephone call and with a HAPPY LANDING or Home!

Wow, Wow, and Wow! This is crazy insane fun, and so glad you shared it with us. Climbing a telephone pole and then jumping. Please, kids, don't try this at home!

What a great accomplishment.  That last step to the top without something to hold onto must have been a real challenge.  It makes the palms of my hands start to sweat just watching the video.  In my painting career as a young man, I would stand on the top of a 10' ladder to reach the high spots.  Those days are gone.  And that is only 10' high!  Well done and thank you for joining in on this month's fun.

I think Anna Banana Kruchten CRS, Phoenix Broker had done this at one point also. Yikes to both of you! This is one thing I have no interest in trying, but I give you a lot of credit for doing so.

Hi Kathy Streib . This telephone pole adventure in a way illustrates life or business when one gets out of their natural comfort zone and does something new creating a whole new perspective is when great things often happen. Jeff

Yes, exactly Ray Henson it was all exhilarating but you are correct that last push to stand on the top of the telephone pole with nothing to hold onto (just air) was something else all together. Jeff 😎

Yes Jeff I've both jumped off the telephone poll many times and also was on the Leadership Staff for all the high and low rope events etc.  Also let me make a small but significant point...... It is NOT wind that is making the pole shake when you're on top but rather your nerves making it shake!  We also did other high ropes event such as the High V's - which is a total team event, more on that in my post.

Yes Kat Palmiotti you got this one!

Hi Anna Banana Kruchten CRS, Phoenix Broker you are the MASTER. Yes that pole did shake along the Pecos River in New Mexico. You are right about the weight of the climber standing on top of the pole making in shake. Jeff 😎

Jeff no master now!  Back then it was a piece of cake to climb and jump!  Not so much the weight or the wind.....people's nerves get to them on that last step up to that teeny tiny platform - if you can call it that!  LOL
