My Favorite Fish Story of All Time

Fishing has never been a favorite pastime of mine, but my family LOVED fishing. Growing up, my parents would drag me and my siblings to a remote creek bank to spend the day in pursuit of supper. Both mom and dad enjoyed the sport. We grew up in a rural area with plenty of places to fish. I never knew if we were on a river, lake or creek, but you can bet my parents knew the best fishing hole.

Once as a teenager, I tried to fake being sick to avoid going fishing. I really didn't want to go. But as parents sometimes do, they made me go anyway. My acting skills apparently weren't very good.

I vividly recall on that trip, sitting on the creek bank and gazing into the water at the stringer of fish, a predator fish swam up and started biting the fish on the line. There was a flurry of activity, splashing water, fish swishing fervently to avoid the bites of this long scary fish. I shouted for the adults to come see, and told them a fish must be loose on the string. By the time they got there the fish had taken off. I thought it ironic that they were the ones fishing, yet I was the one at the shoreline seeing fish!

That's a great childhood memory, but it isn't my favorite.

My favorite fish story of all time is the one shown below. Mom and Dad took my young son and his cousin fishing when they were 2 and 4 years old. I am so happy they took a photo to capture the event.

Boys fishing with grandpaw

My dads' pipe is clenched between his teeth, as it usually was, and he is proudly showing the string of fish he caught with his two grandsons. My son is the younger one on the left.

Details of this trip are fuzzy, as is the photo, because it was taken 40 years ago. My guess is Mom took the picture and went along for adult supervision. I don't know if they were in a boat or the bank that day, but I know they had a great time.

This photo will forever be my favorite fish story of all time.

Thank you for sharing your fish story with us.  It brought back wonderful memories of my grandfather.  He never took me fishing, but he smoked a pipe.  I loved the scent of his raw tobacco when he opened it.  We did have endless fun at his house.  He had a pool with a slide and a diving board.  😃

Most of my fishing experiences have been with my dad and I am hoping to have more soon.

Thanks again!

Ray Henson I'm glad this reminded you of your grandfather. I had almost forgotten the scent of that pipe.

That is a great picture that you shared with us!  The one in orange looks like he was really pleased with the fishing trip, the other one not so much, haha.

The other one was probably missing his nap or his mommy, not necessarily in that order.

That's a priceless picture of your dad and the boys, Pat.  I suspect they enjoyed fishing a little more than you!  Interestingly, I liked fishing as long as I didn't need to put live bait on a hook, or clean the fish.  In fact, I've never cleaned a fish in my entire life.  I've caught a number of them, but others were kind enough to take over the nasty parts.  I can sure cook 'em up though!

Oh, I've had to bait a few hooks in my lifetime, but that was many years ago. Most of the time I'd ask my significant other to bait the hook. Myrl Jeffcoat

Hi Pat,

I was never into fishing, but my husband took the boys camping and brought the poles. It was so much fun watching them run around the boat docks in the marina every time they saw a fish.  These are stories we will never forget.

Pat Starnes-Front Gate Realty - I had to laugh when you mentioned you apparently weren't a good actor when you wanted to fake something. Perhaps your mom was more like you than you knew and that's why you had to go along with them on those fishing on the boat. Fuzzy photos or not, I kind of believe those those are the most favorite memories of our life. I enjoyed reading your story very much.

Thank you very much for sharing some of your family memories with your fish story. My fishing memories are totally different from your. Most my fishing took place in salt water.
