Yet Another Way Of Expressing Thankfulness. . .

I have been thinking.  In particular how one thought can lead to a different one.  Okay, I know what some of you may be thinking - just another day for that pondering, wondering and wandering guy.

Fast forward from my random recollections to Saturday September 3. It was National Cinema Day 2022. Traditionally a slower than usual movie-going time, it was initiated to encourage participation in an activity that has decreased dramatically in recent times.  I am sure the day and the inaugural event were missed by many of you. However, I was intrigued by the nationwide campaign possibilities. And well, I enjoy many aspects of film. The three-dollar ticket price was a nice treat too.  I understand there was a concession in prices at the snack bar although I did not participate.

Of the cinematic choices available, I saw a documentary.  And yes, I can practically hear the yawns grow as I write the title.  Hallelujah:  Leonard Cohen, A Journey And A Song shares a story about a recording artist who was somewhat known to me as well as a spotlight on a song recognized even to someone like myself who can rarely “name that tune”.

But it is the journey where the story really comes alive. And like many paths taken in life, there are some detours along the way.

Merriam Webster defines hallelujah as a way to express joy, praise or thanks.  Ah, for the sake of pondering it's really much more. At least for me.

It's where discoveries can be found. Seeing the movie had me searching for additional information. Continuing to learn. And that's something to be thankful in my opinion. And that's worthy of a Hallelujah!

The timing for National Cinema Day with $3 admission for all day movies was very well timed. In the middle of this West Coast heat wave with temperatures in triple digits, many sought out movie theaters as places to keep cool for a few hours.

The warm (err very hot) weather experienced in much of California certainly made a trip to the theater an easy choice although I would have likely gone.  "Value" can definitely speak loudly at times.

Hi Michael Jacobs -

There was a big campaign that did not go unnoticed about the $3 tickets. I did think of you and your passion for the movies.  We used to belong to a Movie Group.  The idea was that four couples got together monthly and reviewed two movies the hosts picked.  Each brought a dish,  The hosting duties changed every month.  Someone brought a dessert, a salad,  and appetizers.  The hosts made the main course and provided the theme for the evening.  Some of the movies were movies I would never have seen if it were not for the hosts that picked them. The conversation was always intriguing and very fascinating.

I remember you mentioning this group (how time flies, right?).  Happy Memories Monday.  😃

What?  September 3rd was National Cinema Day, and I missed it!  I was too busy hosting my family for dinner that day.  It was hot (107 degrees).  I should have taken them to the air conditioned movies instead!

I think the lower-than-typical ticket prices may have helped and the higher temps outside were certainly on my mind when entering the air-conditioned interior.

Michael, I did think I would go to a movie while away, but really hasn't been time.

It's likely streaming on one of the many services as it wasn't in wide release although it might have been showing in the greater Sacramento area.

Hi Michael,  You do enjoy your movies :)  My question is - how can you bypass the popcorn?  Come on now....

Really, I don't.  I won't say never but it may be pretty close to that number (times where I crave popcorn).

Good morning, Michael Jacobs - last night I heard Bon Jovi sing Hallelujah and thought of you and your post. I regret that I passed up the opportunity to see the documentary of Leonard Cohen when it played in local theaters. I don't do Cable TV, Netflix or stream movies. Hopefully, I will get to see it. Until then, I hope Hallelujah makes its rounds with many voices from now until eternity.

$3 for a movie ticket???? I thought you need a time machine to get that bargain....  When my wife and I went to see the new top gun I'm pretty sure it was over $50 for the two of us with a bucket of popcorn...

Maybe National Cinema Day was a magical movie moment.  Although I haven't seen Top Gun Maverick yet, I have heard it is kinda special too in a retro way as well.  Thankfully, I can refrain from popcorn so there is that to consider to help price busting.  😃

The weekend of the 3rd a a busy one and I completely missed that it was National Cinema Day. I can recall the last time I went to see a movie in an actual movie theater...probably when admission WAS around $3!

Hi Michael! I'm sad that we didn't take advantage of this holiday - but, will certainly be on the lookout for it next year!

Two things come to mind - I see what you did there with the concessions!

And, the Hallelujah Chorus is one of my favorites - sort of relating that to the theme of the movie you saw!!

Debe Maxwell, CRS - thank you for sharing that you "got" the concessions reference as well as the movie title, the subject and this post title connection.  I appreciate it.
