What Being Authentic Can Look Like In Your Real Estate Business

By

"Authenticity is a collection of choices that we have to make every day. It's about the choice to show up and be real. The choice to be honest. The choice to let our true selves be seen. ― Brene Brown, The Gifts of Imperfection.

The subject of "authenticity" is not talked about much. Many new agents enter the real estate business thinking they must conform to what they believe their brokerages want.

They believe they must fit into the "typical" agent, whatever that is, to be successful.

Agents must measure up; if not, they will likely become uncomfortable and feel unfulfilled. And eventually, they fold.

Of course, being authentic is easier said than done. It may make you feel vulnerable and even uncomfortable. But in the long term, the positives outweigh the challenges.

Here's what being an authentic real estate pro looks like.

You Attract Genuine People

You may think there is no such thing as wrong clients, but as soon as you stumble upon them – you will know there is.

By being an authentic leader, you attract clients, partners, and team members who share similar values to you. When you are open-minded with others, they will extend the same courtesy to you. The trust between you and your clients will increase too.

You Stand Out In The Crowd

The competition in today's business market is enormous. Every brand's marketing and social media strategy is filled with all the same buzzwords. Getting through the noise can be tricky.

How can you stand out in the endless stream of content?

The answer is plain and straightforward, being authentic. You don't have to follow the rules others have set before you to "fit" in. Do what feels suitable to your brand and business. Nobody expects polished perfection.

Dare to be raw, and people will notice you!

You Learn More About Your Clients

Although you are vulnerable, you attract the same from your clients by opening up. When you live your life on the fringes, you miss out on many fantastic opportunities to know others on a deeper level.

Think about clients who adore your "authenticity" and how you genuinely enjoy doing business with them. You felt grateful for having these clients contribute to your life, and remember that you, too, have contributed to theirs.

You Have A Peace Of Mind

Pretending is no fun. Building a persona may seem like the safest pathway toward success, but it will mentally and physically drain you in the long run. Even the most straightforward tasks become daunting when you aren't true to yourself.

At first, showing your authenticity may be scary, especially if you've put up a show for the past few years. But once time passes, it will feel natural and right, and the initial discomfort certainly is worth it.

Finally, the ultimate freedom: you decide who you are, and no one can change that. You have more energy because you're not tying yourself in knots to be the person someone else wants. You have deep-down peace of mind because you are honest at the most basic level.

It gives you courage when you act from the place of your deepest self. Approach life with quiet confidence. Don't let opportunities that resonate with you fly by. Seize them.

Be raw! Be vulnerable! You will see just how liberating it is.

"Successful people do what unsuccessful people are not willing to do. Don't wish it were easier; wish you were better." ― Jim Rohn.

Being authentic is so important for us realtors. Buyers and sellers want to feel they can trust who is representing their interest. Our actions speak for us and people can see who we are.

Being authentic is not an easy path as it is much easier to go with the crowd, than to take the path less traveled. Your post is filled with classical wisdom. Thank you.

I love these words: "Be the yellow umbrella in a sea of black. Conformity is boring."

Most people on this platform have been in the real estate business for a long time. We all have our "identity" developed and, while not perfect, have found a path to the destination of our choices. There's no right or wrong way of being authentic (as long as it's legal) we owe it to ourselves by trying.

I am with you on your thought. Authenticity is a word, our action to show our true self speaks the loudest.

Thank you for your presence and for sharing your thought.

Thank you for your words. I am glad you enjoyed it and shared your thought.

I always believe when you enjoy the work and are fueled with passion, it's easier to be "me." Not everyone will agree, and it's not easy to swim in a different direction when you risk drowning in the rough sea!

Hi Aura,
Love your post. I often say I'm too lazy to be anything but authentic. I've always been a bit of a rebel, so I'm fine with not being everyone's cup of tea. I know you might find that shocking.  LOL

The Popeye quote that Nina Hollander, Broker referred to is one of my favorites. I've used it many times to describe myself.

That said, I don't think "authentic" means "all revealing".  We can be authentic without revealing political, religious, or other personal philosophy as long as it doesn't interefere with getting the job done or compromising our values.

As a side note, your post reminded me of Leanne Smith's book:

You described me when you referred to "rebel." I would be surprised if you weren't! It takes one to know one! 😜

I echo your words in the third paragraph, except, I might add....I have to feel comfortable with what I want to reveal. And to whom. I am an introvert and find comfort in a small group or one-on-one basis, and I don't need the world to agree with me to make me feel whole. Nuff said!

I love that my post brings out different opinions and healthy discussions. It's always intriguing to hear yours!

Good morning Aura - I really could not agree more.  I think the tendency in the beginning is to try to follow.  Of course, it is a learning curve but when you are confident in yourself you become yourself, no one else.  Your authenticity becomes your brand and your value proposition.  You can point to why you are unique and be proud of it.  People know you and know you are authentic.

Agreed! I was more curious about learning all things real estate. As part of my learning curve, I found my voice and discovered other characteristics I never thought would be appreciated. I learned to leverage other people's similar values and view them as compatible. Things begin to open up when two people are connected through authenticity.

Every agent finds their own "style" and it can be tricky, being authentic but not fake, honest but not discouraging, etc.  Some have a lot of success with the 'hard sell' .

I echo your thought, Mary Hutchison, SRES, ABR.

It's a good thing to separate authenticity from faking and discouraging! Being tactful supplements our "style."
