Thinking About a Home Renovation? Here Are Signs You May Want to Wait

Home renovations can be a great idea; not only can they help you experience your home in a fresh, new way, but they can also add value to your property—which is great if you’re considering selling in the future.

But just because home renovations can be a great idea doesn’t mean that they are always a great idea. There are definitely times where a renovation just isn’t the right call, and moving forward with a renovation during those times could actually cause more harm than good.

So what, exactly, are some signals you should rethink your renovation plans? A recent article from realtor.com outlined key signs you should consider putting off a home renovation, including:

  • It’s the wrong time of year. You may be anxious or motivated to get your project going, but if you’re in a time of year that’s known for inclement weather that could put your project at risk. Before you start a home renovation, make sure you have plenty of time to complete the project before challenging weather hits—and if you don’t, consider pushing your renovation to a season with more forgiving weather.
  • You watch a lot of home renovation shows—and think the process will be as easy as it is on TV. There are a lot of home renovation shows out there—and all of those shows have the renovation process neatly wrapped up within their 30-minute or one-hour time slot. But the truth is, renovations are typically a lot more complex, timely, and expensive than they look on TV. So if you think your home renovation experience is going to mirror your favorite TV show, you’re going to want to either adjust your expectations, or put off your renovation until you have a more realistic view of what the process might be like.
  • You’re feeling stressed and overwhelmed. Renovations can be stressful, and if you or your family members are already feeling stressed or overwhelmed, that stress can push you over the edge. Consider waiting to do a renovation until you’re in a place where you feel better equipped to manage the extra stress.

The homeowners might want to wait till next season or might want to sell now when the housing prices are still high. Focusing on a few key areas may be enough to make your house stand out from other options. And since inventory is still low overall, it’s also possible buyers may be willing to handle the renovations themselves once they move in.

It all depends on buyer demand and the available inventory in your local area.
