How Can We Honor Them?
From time to time, we visit the Fallen Warriors Memorial here in Cypress, TX to walk there in the park and pay our respects.
We stopped by on September 11 this year because part of the Memorial includes a tribute to Service Dogs. One, in particular, is Bretagne who served as part of the search and rescue efforts in New York after 9/11.
If you look closely at the statue you can see at the bottom what represents the steel beams from the towers.
Prior to 9/11, Bretagne helped with rescue efforts after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Besides being a fixture at the Cy-Fair Volunteer Firehouse, she gave support to elementary school children learning to read.
In June 2016, her handler Denise Corliss of Cypress knew that Bretagne’s time of service had come to an end. She is believed to be the last 9/11 search dog. Watch as Bretagne and Denise are met by an honor guard of firefighters as they arrive at the vet’s office where Bretagne was euthanized. (I will warn you, I sat down and cried)
