Aloha Friday from Maui - dragon fruits

flowers of the dragon fruit vines

Above are the flowers which come out at night or early morning.

Below are the ripe pink fruits.  We planted a bunch of vines 3 years ago and this year we harvested over 20 fruits, and still a few more to come.  These vines are super easy to grow in Haiku Maui and we're planting more!

I slice them in half and then cut the halves into slices with the skin on so they're easy to pick up.  They you just bite the centers and eat the fruit, while discarding the pink peel.  They have a texture sort of like a kiwi fruit - with the tiny black seeds that you eat, but they're sweet and not tart like a kiwi - just soft and sweet with a little crunch of seeds... very refreshing.

Night flowers have always intrigued me.  Something very special about them.  The fruits pictured I have never seen before.  M

Hi Georgie... loved the pictures of the dragon fruit. I see it here in the supermarket from time to time... haven't bought any in a very long time... might just need to do so soon.

They are beautiful, the flowers and fruit. Do dragonfruit taste similar to anything else? I've never had one.

Georgie Hunter R(S) 58089 - WOW! I am impressed, intrigued, and fascinated with the fruit and flowers and all the beautiful colors of edible fruit! I have seen the dragon fruits before but was afraid to buy it because I didn't know what it was called or what to do with it. Now I know! You are the expert in exotic fruit!!! They make such beautiful and attractive dishes to prepare. This is GREAT!!!

Hi Georgie:

Dragon fruit is amazing to look at, and has a wonderful flavor as I recall. Can't say I recall seeing it here in SoCal!
