Let's Keep it "Real" in Real Estate

Have you ever really thought about the name of our profession in real estate? As I was pondering this, I wanted to dig into the word, "real" a bit further. In what appears to be a simple word, much more is implied.

The dictionary tells us the word, "real" means the following:

a. having objective independent existence

b. not artificial, fraudulent, or illusory

c. occurring or existing in actuality

Therefore, as real estate professionals, we do have an objective, independent existence in that we are independent contractors for the most part. The "b" definition is very important in that we are to present factually, never be involved in any fraudulent dealings, or present an illusion of anything other than the facts. And finally, we do exist.

When we look at real estate in those terms, we are reminded that the "real" in the title of our profession is extremely important. I take this a step further as well and that means being truly authentic in my community, with my fellow agents, and with my clients. We must never allow ourselves to become hardened, jaded, or unaffected by this profession.

Our clients depend on us to tell them the reality of the good, the bad, and the ugly in all of our dealings. Remaining "real" and true in this business will encourage the professionalism that we all must uphold. Let's keep it "real" in real estate!

Good morning Dr. Paula McDonald ,

I see some agents forget this mantra which is so important. Our clients depend on us for our honesty, integrity and professionalism. We can't let them down! We need to keep it real!

Excellent advice, Paula. I've seen agents become hardened and jaded and thought to myself it was time for them to move on to something else... they were doing no favors to their clients with that attitude. As for keeping it real by being honest in terms of the the good, the bad, and the ugly... what do we gain if we are not honest with our clients? Even when the reality is ugly we can present it without being ugly.

Dr. Paula McDonald - We have all seen the agents that never got the memo. Those kinds of folks are everywhere ...  not just in real estate.

Thankfully, the good outweighs the bad and the ugly.

I like the definitions of real, and how you applied them to our profession. Nice post and a good reminder of how to present ourselves in reality to those around us.

We all witness illusions of real in this business. As my friend Michael Jacobs stated; ponder on Paula 🙂.
