Going To The Dog...

... lovers out there.

6 years ago our beloved Jack died, 20+ years ago we owned a pet shop. Today we have a seven year old rescue named Baby (pictured above). What does this all have to tie it self together... dog food.

When we owned the pet shop dog food was on average $20.00 for the 40lb bag. Science Diet was "top dog" back then and it was about $35.00. WOW what happened?

Now Pedigree (once considered near top of the line) is $26.00 at Menard's and the Fromm brand pictured above (never heard of it before) is the lowest cost dog food available at Pets Plus at $60.00 a bag.

I know there are a lot of dog owners out there so I want to ask: Is this insane or what?

Baby is a 6 year old Shepherd Cross and still has the appetite of a puppy. I am asking other dog owners if there is a good dog food at a reasonable price out there and where do you purchase it? Please tell.

You have hit on a topic that I had to confront last week.  I went into our local Smart and Final grocery.  They actually had cans of fancy cat food on the shelf, the size of a can of tuna fish.  They were selling those cans for $2.49 each.  I love my cats, but I'm not stupid.  I went a couple aisles over and bought several cans of Tuna Fish for 99 cents.  I also bought a rotisserie chicken.  The felines and I will eat on that for a few days.

Bob we have three cats and a dog, each one is on different diets because of health issues, so we have to get the food from the Vets and some they have at Pet Smart.... keep in mind Diane spends more time on making sure we do not run out of the food... I do not ask what it costs and yes I know prices have skyrocketed... but they are our children and anything for them....Endre

This is one of the reasons that the shelters are full.

Many families can no longer afford their pets.

Interesting comment from Roy.  When I checked our local shelter mid Pandemic it was virtually empty.  Less than 20 of what used to be 100's.  People at home had time for a new 4 legged buddy.  I have not checked since this huge price influx.  Will be interesting to see the count.  Off subject on your food question Bob.  Everything seems to be raging out of control.  Going to be an interesting year ahead.  M

I'm going to come back to this post to see if you get any good suggestions. I get our food from Chewy and it's expensive so I have no good tips for you.

Good morning Bob,

A topic I'm hearing many weigh in on. The pet food has gotten insane and there are many who are on a limited budget and can't absorb this added cost coupled with their own rising food costs, gas, clothing etc. They can't print money like the government. Its a hard choice I'm seeing some have to make. My brother just got a wonderful 3 year old golden retriever that an older couple just couldn't afford to keep with their budget out of whack and now medical issues surfacing.

Yet another reason that I am glad that I do not own a dog of my own, haha.

Oh my goodness, love, love, love that picture of Baby. Having worked for Mars, I'm very familiar with Kal-Kan... now Pedigree. My Bingo is served their soft food, but it's also gone way up in price. As for his hard food, I use Science Diet and pay the price. I think all pet food is expensive right now.

It just seems crazy Myrl Jeffcoat and you know they are just preying upon our love for our pets. I forgot to mention that there were bags of dog food there in the $80.00 range.

Thank you once again for the feature in the OLD FARTS CLUB. 😂

Endre Barath, Jr. the food manufacturers know that we think of them as our children and that is how they get away with it. I am familiar with the special diet, some Science Diet products require a vets prescription before we could get the product in our store.

I believe that to be true as well Roy Kelley . I wrote a post or two about how expensive a free dog is and then if you go to a shelter here in Minot you can add another $100. right off the bat.

2023 will be an interesting year for sure Mark Don McInnes, Sandpoint-Idaho as well as November of this year. We have two shelters here and both are so over crowded that they are begging for "Foster" pet owners to come forward.

With your comment I was reminded to check our shelter web site.  23 is all the dogs showing and they seem to be out numbered by cats.  That seems out of character...   Glad to see our overall numbers are still down.  m

I checked out Chewy yesterday Kat Palmiotti and was surprised that they were less then a $1.00 cheaper then locally BUT then again they do deliver to your door which is nice.

And they have fast delivery. I usually have the food in my hands 2-3 days later.

Dorie Dillard Austin TX that is exactly what Roy Kelley was saying as well and I had never considered it until you and Roy mentioned it. It's hard to know how much difference a medium priced food helps/harms your pet compared to those crazy expensive foods.

Brian England , when we got Baby my concern was what do we do when we go on vacation.... I never dreamed of all the expenses as it was always cheap in the past, even just 5 years ago.

Nina Hollander, Broker I had no idea that Pedigree used to be Kal-Kan, I wondered where Kal-Kan went. 😂  Science Diet was the most expensive dog food in the stores not all that long ago and even though it has gone up it is far from the most expensive food that I saw at Pets Plus.

Hi Bob... Kal-Kan did not go anywhere. The name was simply changed to Pedigree Foods to have consistency all over the world. Forrest Mars, Senior started the canned pet food business in Europe after WWII in Slough, England and it was always called Pedigree Foods internationally. Mars purchased Kal-Kan many years ago from another US manufacturer and sold the product as Kal-Kan because that was a recognized name. Over the past couple of decades they've gradually transitioned to the Pedigree name in the US as well.

Very cool history Nina Hollander, Broker . Baby came with a 50 lb bag of Pedigree and she likes it BUT due to shedding and skin issues we decided to enhance her meal by mixing the Pedigree 50/50 with the Fromm dog food. It seems to be working... along with a cooked scrambled egg a day.

What don't we do for our fur-babies, Bob. Don't know if you have a Walmart near you, but that's where I purchase Bingo's Pedigree foods... it's the least expensive place in town. His Science Diet I buy on Chewy.com because I buy a bag that lasts for 14-15 weeks and it's way too big for me to handle... so have delivery to my door is helpful. Plus free shopping and 5% off for a standing order.

GREAT information Nina Hollander, Broker . We do have a Walmart in town so I will check it out. I looked at Chewy.com yesterday and I do like the idea of it being delivered to my door. I did not know about 5% discount what is a "standing order", do you have to have it come monthly?
