Motivational Monday…Use What You Know, Learn What You Don’t Know

The other night, a friend was over until 11 pm while I helped him with a word document.  He is 75 and is someone who many would say shouldn’t own a computer.

Unfortunately, he has Alzheimer's. I have to hand it to him though because he is not letting that stop him.

Working with him, I showed him how to change the font size and font and reminded him to save the document. (I’m keeping my fingers crossed that he can remember this until tomorrow when he has asked for more help.)

I think tasks involving the computer are harder for him because in his work he always had an assistant who took care of this, while topics such as sports and business are easier for him to remember because they have always been in his life.

Use it or lose it

We’ve all heard this saying. When we stop working out, our muscles show it. The same thing goes for our brain cells. They beg to be worked out and when we stop, they can wither like an appendage that is no longer used.

Learn Something New

Some recommend learning a new language or learning to play a musical instrument. If you work crossword puzzles…that’s good…but take up a new word game. Like reading books?  Give some of your other cells a workout by trying a different genre.

I am by no means a doctor but I do feel that besides healthy eating, exercise, and being socially engaged, it is important to Use what you know and learn what you don’t know.

This week, join my brain cells and me in learning something new!

**If you have not yet read Aura Alex's post, I encourage you to do so.  While there is no cure (yet) more is learned every year. Until then…let’s keep it going together.

It is very important to feed our brains with new things, activities and exercise.  Some like to use certain games, but I haven't been into that.  I have chosen to use DuoLingo to learn Spanish.  I must admit, what I could have mastered in a couple years when I was younger, has taken me longer at my age.  But, I'm getting there!

Hi Dorie Dillard Austin TX I've found that when I begin doing online jigsaw puzzles, it has helped a different part of my brain. I can create puzzles from my own photos and the puzzle is on my computer. I have to look into Wordle. I know it's popular, but haven't looked into it.

Bill Salvatore - East Valley yes, it's so important to keep exercising our dendrites.

Hi Kathy,

My husband is much better at computers than I am.  He does help seniors anytime they ask for help.  Fortunately, those asking for help have Macs!  I stay in close touch with many of my clients or neighbors who are more senior than I am, and I will take them to lunch and ensure they are doing well.  I used to serve lunch at our senior center, but my business is too demanding to be on a schedule.  I am constantly off plan taking care of client needs.

Aura Alex my mother had dementia and you're right.  We quit saying "don't you remember" I learned that humor was better for her. I think pressure and stress exacerbate everyone's ability to focus so we kept everything light for her. When she said that she used to be able to remember everything, we told her that it was now full...and to let us remember for her.   Thank you for your very kind words.

Carol Williams Thank goodness your SIL has you. It is a lonely, scary road and even harder for their loved ones. And Aura Alex yes...humor and light. They often know that they can't remember so we don't need to remind them.

Pat Champion I like that one too!!!!

Myrl Jeffcoat that's ok. You may not have learned it when you were younger unless you needed to. I watch car shows with Larry because I'm learning something new even though I have no interest in learning how to rebuild a car. LOL Thank you for the feature in  your group.
