Hello October. . .

Hello October

One Mo Time. . .

Recently, I finished a book written by Mo Rocca. Titled Mobituaries Great Lives Worth Reliving, it is co-authored by Jonathan Greenberg. It provides an opportunity to glean a different perspective when looking beyond an obituary.

Although well-researched, each chapter is a relatively quick read with stories of famous people from many parts of history to others who are less known.

While I finished reading the book in September, it also seems like a good way to introduce October. Understandably, an obituary can put us in a somber mood. However, it can also be a time where other thoughts come forth. The book is far from fussy (I realize the subject may not be the right fit for everyone) but I believe it is appropriately respectful.

And isn’t that the spirit we can use in any month even when ghouls, ghosts and goblins do not hold a special connection?

That dash we use to punctuate those moments between birth and death represent a much larger story. In my opinion, this book is a nice addition to looking beyond the dashes in life.

Happy October.

Michael, sounds like quite the interesting read. I often wonder what lies ahead, and how the impression we made in life will be remembered.

Thank you very much, Michael, for telling us about this book.

Have an outstanding weekend. We have rainy weather in Maryland.

Roy Kelley - I guess Ian is having an impact up and down the Eastern seaboard although rain is always welcome in our area - too much of it can certainly have devastating effects.

Michael Jacobs : I'm so glad you checked out Celeste Barbour! I love how she pokes fun and its so hard to not to laugh and sometimes belly laugh at her antics. She found a niche. With her accent and humor its not a wonder she is a success!

Good morning Michael. There is a book entitled "The Dash."   This books references the dash between the year of one's birth and one's passing.

Obits are interesting to read. I have one about what is written on tombstones in the old west. I purchased this book years ago before we moved to west.

Leanne Smith - I imagine a history of all sorts of lore could be associated with tombstones.

Hi Michael,

I love the last paragraph and the way it concludes your post.  There are a lot of dashes in our lives that do represent a larger part of the story.

BTW - I don't recognize that exact street in your feature photo, but it so reminds me of San Marino, Pasadena, and the entire area.  I lived in newer areas that did not have mature trees and loved working and visiting Pasadena.  Your market reports always made me feel I was home.

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® - thank you.  Although I couldn't find an exact quote, these words came to mind.  Maybe most thoughts are based on things we have read or heard over the years.

As for the photo, I think it is from a post about the Bungalow Heaven neighborhood in Pasadena.   It was taken at least five, probably more, years ago.

Roy Kelley - I just returned from a walk in the neighborhood.  While it's not totally dark, I can sense a change is in the air.  Seasonally and in other ways as well.  Enjoy your day in Maryland and the week ahead too.

We have a change in the air in Maryland. We have a fire in our fireplace for the first time this season. Thankfully, we have a gas fireplace.

Roy Kelley - it seems to me that a fire in a fireplace makes a home a bit cozier.  Enjoy.

Hi Michael,
I think the best testament to any individual life is one worth writing about after it's over... and especially by someone that wasn't related to the deceased.  The book Leanne Smith referenced sounds interesting too.

Carol Williams - that's true as it provides the opportunity to reflect on the total, not just what may be most-known.  Leanne knows how to site some interesting and intriguing sources.

That sounds like a very good book, especially since it isn't fussy, haha.  I don't look at death as being a bad thing.  God will take us when he is ready for us.

Brian England - since I know you don't often read books, you might find some YouTube videos (and maybe even something from the twittosphere) of Mo Rocca where he shares some stories of people plus places that are famous, infamous and others who are interesting in their own ways.    Dead and alive.  Real and beyond reality too.

This definitely sounds like something I would enjoy reading too, Michael. In fact, It's almost my time to make a suggestion for our bookclub and adding humor to obits is something we could all use - especially at our ages.

I'm also intrigued by Dorie Dillard Austin TX's suggestion to research Celeste Barbour. Thanks you two!

Michael Jacobs

Debe Maxwell, CRS - Celeste Barbour is now on my YouTube Rabbit Hole Radar.  The post by Dorie Dillard Austin TX sharing her experience of seeing Celeste on stage prompted my search for a book by her.  I am sure her persona on paper is even more evident when she "performs".

Debe Maxwell, CRS - life provides many opportunities for stealthy and at time somewhat secretive missions.  As part of my own disclosure package, I am not trained in radar though I have noticed I have gone incognito online.  Typically, unintentionally and/or by accident.   🙃

And, it'll be on my radar soon too, Michael Jacobs! For tonight, I have to watch my assigned puppy training videos before Maddie goes for her 2nd day of 'camp' (training school) tomorrow!!

Now, that's funny, Michael Jacobs! I have often wished I had a second FB persona - in another name, of course. I would love to be able to say how I really feel to some of the ridiculous posts & comments made on that platform!! Instead, I just move on. It could be a godsend that I don't have another account - talk about rabbit holes that could keep you going all day! 🤣

Michael Jacobs - how interesting.... I think I would enjoy learning more about the lives of other spirits. As a former Girl Scout Leader, I think this would also make a great project for scouts, since visiting cemeteries and learning history from ones community is something my girls earned badges for. Mobituaries would be a nice twist.

Michael Jacobs - Lots of questions will take a lot of digging. But it can be done! Exhuming "all types of information," sounds like a science project or something a writer would enjoy investigating. Isn't it all, so interesting!

Oct 03, 2022 05:50 AM
Michael Jacobs

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP - that's a twist that never occurred to me.  I am sure one that Julia Gordon Lowe couldn't imagine either which makes me wonder if Mo Rocca has explored her life or that of Robert Baden Powell.  And his sister too.

Maybe it's a story where connections come together in ways we never considered.   Digging deeper, especially when it comes to cemetery-related topics can exhume all types of information.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP - uncovering mysteries and discovering mashups, mishaps and other mischievous aspects of life (and any possible thereafter) can be the start of Pandora Pondering.  Perhaps.
