October Challenge Is Not Scary

It is October Contest time, and Aura AlexLeanne Smith, and Carol Williams are co-hosting this month's ActiveRain Challenge. They are asking us to share our favorite blogging success stories, of which I have many. Just search 'blogging success HomeRome' to come up with more.


There are a lot of naysayers who believe blogging isn't effective anymore. These same naysayers have said many things do not work. And sometimes they are right. So glad I didn't listen to them. Some of the things that they say don't work or are not worth the time are as follows:

Blogging is a waste of time.

You can't drive a two-door car.

No one listens to the radio.

Print media no longer works because of the internet.

One-hour open houses don't work.

You can't make appointments, service, and show all your properties.

You can't get a full commission in this market.

 

Good thing I don't listen to these naysayers. My real estate career was built on doing the above, and after three decades, I still love making dreams come true. I am a happy Real Estate Broker. (Thanks, Marte Cliff

 Since 2006, when I began blogging, I haven't missed a day signing in; most days, I write a blog post. That post does more than sit on ActiveRain. I link it to my MargaretRome.com website, share it with buyers and sellers,and showcase it in my weekly ads,

and use the material on my weekly radio show.

Today, I quoted two AR members, Kathy Streib and Andrea Bedard, on my radio show.

There are so many examples of how blogging has worked for me. 

 I often hear:" You are so busy...how do you have time to blog?"  My answer: "maybe I am so busy because I make time to blog."

Quite a few years ago, I sold one of my listings, and the represented buyers started following my blog. They came to one of my open houses and invited me to their open house...all through ActiveRain. I tried to get their agent involved in blogging through AR. I talked about the benefits and business opportunities and offered to set her up with some private sessions. I encouraged her to post her client's home for sale.

Being a dual career agent, the agent's time was limited, and she did not want to engage and never took me up on my invitation to join ActiveRain.

Her clients continued following my daily posts and frequently commented. They also tried to convince her to blog. It's the first time I've seen the public encourage an agent to blog.  

After seven months, I received an email through my ActiveRain account. These people had already terminated the listing and asked if I would consider representing them. They knew I would not discuss their home while still listed with their friend and agent.

I listed their house, wrote a blog, and sold the house before the sign went up

Love the example of the people who came to you when their listing expired, and how you had it sold before the sign went up. Whoo hoo!

Margaret those who think blogging is a waste of time, is because they fail to blog to their target audience.  Blogging like anything else is not effective if it is all over the place, and not audience specific.

Hi Margaret- I love this and thank you for mentioning me. I can remember when I first joined ActiveRain and began blogging. I talked about it to every agent I met when I was an affiliate with the Board of Realtors and the Women's Council of Realtors. Most said exactly what others said to you...they didn't have time. 

You have shown that you can make the time to do what is important to you.

Good morning, Margaret... I whole heartedly agree! I've driven a sports coupe as a real estate agent. I believe print marketing works if used correctly and consistently. I listen to the radio (but just in my car). I sell at full commission all the time. In fact, recently, I did a listing agreement at 5% to a multiple repeat client and she emailed me back and said to take 6%. I've been a proponent of "short" open houses for a long time (when I do them, which is rare). More people don't come just because it's three hours instead of two or one hour.

Oh, all are SO true, Margaret! I love that last line - it is true that blogging is good for the business!  Love the short opens - I typically do 2 hours to be sure I can pay attention to all of those who come through but, now that buyers are not out in droves like they were, I'm going to switch to your one-hour method!
