When A Dumbphone Becomes Adorkable. . .

When A Dumbphone

Becomes Adorkable. . .

Beyond idiomatically, the word seems to be "on the street".  And it appears there are some words and terms joining the race where references to this, that and thereabouts exist.

Recently, I saw an online announcement that Merriam-Webster has made some additions to their dictionary.  Joining the word parade is dumbphone, adorkable and side hustle among others.

While some of the words were not new-t0-me, I guess these additions create excitement in the dictionary world.   Being and staying aware helps keep us ready to go forward over the hurdles of wordplay where increased knowledge can help us stay competitive.

Years ago, the wordsmithery of Carol Williams and her introduction of pondertunity in a comment (sadly, an omission to the MW list is clearly an oversight) prompted me to think of pondermust. As for new dictionary discoveries, I guess that race continues and may the excitement increase in sighs. . .

Hi, Michael.

Nowadays, you can Google any words and find meanings, spelling, how to use them, etc. I always wonder if I look up a spelling word, shoots back at me and says, "not found." And the suggestions are not that helpful. So, why would you use Dictionary if you already know how to spell the word? And you can get everything else via Google Assistant and other software.

Alexa and Siri can tell you how to spell words and other things. Some schools use Alexa in classrooms, and kids use it with homework, etc. Where will all these digital nomads take us?

You have just inspired another post for me to dig deeper into this digital lifestyle. Thank you.

Aura Alex - the act of Googling is dilemma-fraught.   Online games of all kinds extend beyond the playground of our mind where the ground rules seem to be constantly "in dispute" in some way.    Forever and beyond.

Aura Alex - like you, I have often found AR posts, comments, questions/answers and other asides (maybe they are sides being served) to be a wonderful source of post inspiration.  I look forward to reading what you uncover with your mind-digging excavation.

Good morning Michael - with all of those other new words I think you should submit Pondermust!

Grant Schneider - I am not sure of the procedure or process.  Is that a predicament or merely another pondering possibility?

Anna Banana Kruchten CRS, Phoenix Broker - as we know, the "word salad" has been a regular on the ActiveRain menu over the years.  It's not universally well-liked.  However, it seems to make a comeback when we think it has disappeared.

Like appetizers, main courses and even desserts, reservations are not necessary.   Being able to pick and choose what to digest (err read) is an a la carte adventure.

Michael Jacobs - it is hard to keep up with the revision of words in the dictionary. Adorkable is a new one for me. I pray nobody ever says I am adorkable.

Yes. I remember the blog post about pondertunity. It seems a short time ago and I still haven't found it in print or the Merriam Webster dictionary. If I find it, I'll let you know.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP - life throws a lot of information towards us. "Some" hits, other misses and there are those that may ricochet until they finally make their way to our memory as well as usage.

While adorkable was a new find for me too, I am pretty sure I have been called worse, maybe even much worse.  Life goes on.  And so does finding new things.

I guess once Miriam Webster includes it it's legit! Haven't heard of adorkable but dumbphone, given we've had smartphone for quite some time, is no surprise. Side hustle has been around for a while! Is Google in there as a verb? How about Docusign?

Oct 05, 2022 07:48 PM

Jeff Dowler, CRS - don't you think Google is a lot like Kleenex in many ways? As for DocuSign, it is definitely in the REALTOR handbook, right?

Endre Barath, Jr. - my pondermust was inspired by pondertunity which was coined by Carol Williams.  I doubt either will ever make it to Merriam Webster anytime soon.

Some of us need to Google the new words.

Learn to pronounce
  1. unfashionable or socially awkward in a way regarded as appealing or cute.
"he is so adorkable I could just hug him to death"

Love that term but, some of them have me shaking my head, Michael! I had to re-read sponcon and that led me to ponder the life of an influencer...and how simplicity no longer exists in the lifestyles of many.

Thanks for sharing the list. Like you, some I've heard of and have even used; others are new to me too!
