Hurricane Ian and Gratefulness

By

So many things I take for granted until a devasting storm reminds me in a brutal way.  Today my power came back on and I was able to have a hot cup of coffee and air conditioning.  I knew this from  previous storms but I always forget.  I may remember this time - every morning when I have that first cup.

I am so grateful for the POWER LINEMEN who are working so hard and so long to get everyone’s power up and running at the sacrifice of their own families and lives.

I am grateful for the FIRST RESPONDERS who are also working so long and so hard and really putting up with a lot from stressed out, storm weary people and yes, some very selfish and mean people.  Their jobs are probably rarely sunshine and rainbows and this situation can’t be easy.  They handle it all professionally at the sacrifice of their own traumas.

I am grateful for the BUSINESS OWNERS who were able to open their businesses and share food and ice cold drinks and great service.

I am grateful for the INDIVIDUAL CITIZENS AND COMMUNITIES who rallied together and gave away free food and water and helped each other out when needed.

I am grateful to the MEDICAL PERSONNEL who have worked tirelessly throughout, doing what they can, especially with one hospital out of commission.

I am grateful to all the WEATHER REPORTERS AND EXPERTS who kept us up to date on the storm situation.

I am grateful to all my FRIENDS who checked on me and worried about my family and me.

Patience and kindness do really go a long way.  Although this one is going to take a long recovery, we have done it before and we’ll do it again.

Thank you to all of these courageous and selfless human beings and if I left anyone out - thank you too!

Hello Vickie - I agree with the comment by Emily Medvec.  Thank you for this post where kindness is on display amid such horrible tragedy.  Kindness need not ever be in short supply.   Good luck as you move forward.

Michael Jacobs yes, sadly kindness is in short supply like our inventory. As for Vickie Teel she is filled with it.

Emily Medvec - Kindness is the gift that can keep on giving.  And by continuous giving, it often begins to expand exponentially.

Thank you for your gratitude post, and I am happy you were able to have your coffee yesterday morning (and air conditioning!) A lot of people work hard when disasters strike, and are often not recognized, so your post will mean a lot to a lot!

Hi Vickie- I love your very thoughtful post!!!  And I'm glad to "know" you because see all try to check in with fellow members during and after an event. You are so right...we need to be more grateful for those who make our lives a lot easier. I can remember when we were in Delray during Irma, I saw lineman out working before and right after the hurricane.

Hi Kathy Streib - yes these selfless souls work so hard around the clock no matter the conditions.  Thank you also for all your helpful blog posts.  I feel there are so many posts I would miss if I didn’t have yours to point them out

Good morning Vickie. As a forest resident of Ft. Myers and active, at different times, in properties from Naples through Sarasota, I was amazed at the damage and how people rallied to help the recovery. Glad you are safe.

Vickie - I am so glad you are safe.  As a homeowner in Port Saint Lucie I watched the hurricane change course but I was ready with shutters and everyone was a big help.  Thanks to all those you mentioned.

Grant Schneider - I'm thinking I need to move closer to Tampa.  This is the 2nd time a storm was predicted to head that way and turned this way.  So glad you were prepared just in case and that you didn't have to go through all this.

As Emily Medvec and others have said, expressing your gratitude is such a powerful behavior.  May your life and those of other affected by this hurricane return to normal or some normalcy as soon as possible.

Thank you Leanne Smith - expressing gratitude really is a powerful behavior.  If nothing else, it gives you a good feeling and a chance to appreciate all the good in your life.  I'm afraid this devastation is going to take a while to come back to normal but we've been through it before.  We are alive and "things" can be fixed.  Thank you for your good thoughts.

No one understands the aftermath of a hurricane until they have been through it.  no electricity, no water or boil water, can't flush toilets.

Hi faye schubert - you are so right.  We have a lot of new people who have moved here in the last few years and they believe that it all should have been fixed within a few days.  They really did not know what to expect afterwards.  It is a process.

Vickie Teel - this is the first time I learned you are a member of ActiveRain. I had to go back to check the dates and realized you had to wait 7 days to get power, air conditioning, and your first hot cup of coffee. Florida was devastated yet you have a grateful heart knowing everyone was helping others, as best as they could. How are things today? I know it will take a long time for FL to get back to the way it should but I hope you are doing well and your family, friends, and business too. I did not have a cup of coffee this morning, but your post was a real eye-opener. I will keep you and everyone in FL in my thoughts and prayers.
