Why The Most Important Question For Your Success is "Why"

By
Services for Real Estate Pros Retired

"Keep your eyes on the Stars, but your feet on the ground." — Theodore Roosevelt.

Kids have a never-ending list of why questions. Why is the grass green? Why do I have to eat broccoli? Why do I have to go to school? As we grow older, we become less curious about finding the answers to these questions.

Still, asking yourself "Why" once every while is essential. Whether in your personal life or business, exploring your meaning and purpose can make all the difference.

Why Asking "Why" Is Essential

Years ago, I attended and listened to Simon Sinek, author of "Start with Why," which made a splash with his presentation at a TEDx Talk. He focused on business and personal life and why asking "Why" is essential.

Sinek believes that everyone knows what they do, many know how they do it, but few know why. However, he argues that knowing our "Why" is at the core of our success.

The why is what drives you to do what you do. It's your purpose. Your cause. And your belief.

Sinek calls it "The Golden Circle," which starts with "Why" in the circle's heart, followed by How and What.

Examples Of Successful "Whys"

Steve Jobs and his partners created Apple by marketing their "Why." People stood in line for hours and days for some to buy Apple's first iPhone. Why? Because it gave an emotional spark and pride to those, who wanted to be part of the "first." Apple told them why it believed its first iPhone offered the breakthrough in the smartphone innovation no one else did. People believed in what Apple believed.

It says Apple doesn't have customers; it has fans!

As one of the civil rights leaders Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. inspired those, who believed in his "Why." King believed in his "dream" and not a plan. The word "dream" had an emotional impact and planted fervent hope in 250,000 people who showed up to listen to Dr. King.

They were the people touched and inspired by Dr. King's profound and inspiring words in his powerful "I have a dream" speech.

Why Your "Why" Matters

Whatever you do must have a purpose, and it doesn't have to be anything significant. If you have the answer, moving forward will be much easier.

Reaching your goals won't be a walk in the park. To make your dreams come true, you will need to put in a lot of effort and time. Most people fail to reach their goals because they lack an intense and emotional "Why" to fuel the "fire in the belly" that must be kept burning!

Your "Why" is your purpose and reason for being, and the core belief motivates you to take action and achieve your goals.

Your "Why" is the North Star that guides you through life. No matter how dark or stormy your path may await, if you keep your eyes on the Stars, you'll always arrive at your desired destination. Just Believe!

So, find Your "Why" and let it be your source of strength and inspiration for your success. Enjoy the ride!

"Regardless of WHAT we do in our lives, our WHY—our driving purpose, cause or belief—never changes."  — Simon Sinek.

Good morning Aura,

Hi, Buzz Mackintosh. I agree with your thought. For me, in addition to education for the "why" I also focus on the source of my "self-satisfaction" which many times during the life of my "project" remain unchanged.

I've always been a "why" person.

It's the driver and the motivation to finding a solution or even completing a task.

"Just do it" doesn't work for me.

faye schubert, hi, faye; for some, "just do it" may not work, but the subtle approach with confidence and well thought out propel them to the finish line.

It turns out that I am a Samsung guy too, Nina Hollander, Broker and Aura Alex, but I do lament not buying stock in Apple years ago when they were having some problems.  Motley Fool was almost screaming to buy it.   Yes, Apple knew their why and it brought huge conviction and then huge profits.  Another great article, Aura.  Congratulations on getting it featured!

Ray Henson hi Ray... I regret selling my couple of shares of Berkshire Hathway stock decades ago. Paid a fortune for it and it never moved. Didn't lose money on it, but if I'd held it, I'd have made a mint.

I did the same thing with Berkshire Hathaway B shares, Nina Hollander, Broker.  Some things just seem so easy in retrospect, but difficult at the time.  When I was considering those Apple shares, there was a lot of negativity and a big potential lawsuit hanging over their heads.  It was the same kind of issues that kept me from pulling the trigger on Tesla.  If only I would have known Brian England at the time.  He would have set me straight.  I guess the real question is, "What do we buy now?" I better find the right "why" this time! 🙂

Tesla stock is on heavy discount right now Ray Henson you should get some!  I wish I had money to buy more of it now, haha.

That is a good "why" Brian England.  I do love discounts.  This year stock market discounts seem to get bigger every single day, but thank you coach, I may have to buy a share or two.

I believe we're entitled to feel selfish when we can't share those personal "triumphs" with others. What drives us is not the same as what drives others.

The extended term "you can lead a  horse to water, but you can't make it drink" applies. So, my selfish feeling is justified! :)

Leanne Smith, for sure, EI is vital in career success. When (in the past) I looked for employees, I would choose candidates high on EI over IQ.

I have a few great examples of team members who consistently are high achievers using their "anger," yes, anger, to motivate themselves to take action and succeed! That's another post in the future. 🙃

The comment thread was getting too long, so I'm starting a new one.

I think there will be enough interest among us in AR to learn more about "investment" in stock and/or real estate.

While I vote for real estate investment in commercial properties, I'd be interested in learning about those who have successfully invested in others like stock, REITs, crowdfunding platforms, or the like that can be discussed and learned (maybe thru Zoom?).

Any thoughts on this? Anyone? Perhaps this should be in a Q&A section?

Aura Alex hi Aura... I was being a bit tongue-in-cheek with my comment about forming an investment group. One thing I don't do is share investment ideas or listen to investment ideas from people who are not professional investment advisors.

Oct 11, 2022 11:34 AM
Nina Hollander, Broker

Aura Alex hi Aura... I've seen people sued for recommending an advisor after they were asked for recommendations when that advisor did not perform as well as expected. That's why I'm very careful about what I say and to whom.

Oct 11, 2022 11:51 AM

Ray Henson, I like your idea of an investment club. I agree that we can share ideas and not necessarily advice. I have never hired professionals and don't have any plans to do so.

I'll be in touch with you. Thank you for the idea.

Nina Hollander, Broker. Here's my two-cent. It depends on how you define "advisors" I would listen to anyone who has been there and done that, and successfully. I don't have sufficient knowledge to share, but I am open to learning. Whether or not I would take their advice, it's a personal preference.

Hi Aura Alex.  I love the idea of an investment club.  It is not to give advice, imho, but to share ideas.  I do that all the time with my friends.  I have a large amount of money that I will be investing soon and I trust my friends advice much more than any professional that I have ever hired.  Anyway, if you ever want to share ideas with a friend, I am here.

Hey guys now may or may not be the time to invest in stocks....unless you intend for a long term hold  investment - not a quick trade. Stock market has dropped a lot this year and I keep hearing to expect more....and it could hang on awhile. i listen to the financial advisors advice.

Hi Aura,
Your post took my brain in a little different direction than most. Surprise!

It made me think about those people that ask sorrowfully, "Why Me?" when something bad happens. I think they'd be a lot better off if they set their mind to actually figuring that out instead of wallowing in their pity.

LOL! Nothing surprises me about your thoughts taking you in a different direction than most! Carol Williams

My thought is that I let myself "mourn" when I get frustrated looking for a miracle to cure my sorrow or disappointment. And I think it's natural for everyone to "let go" of the expectation of ourselves and others. And acknowledge the reality of our defeat or loss of something out of our control.

One thing I learned is to get out of the "why me?" mode as I begin to tell myself next time the "disappointment" strikes, I shrug and think "S#!%  happens!" At that moment, I changed my "state of mind" and begin asking "Why" again. And it's OK to find new "Whys."

Excellent post and great reminder for all. "Why" is so important and is the fuel that keeps us going. As you state, if you have the answer to your "Why" moving forward is easier and you'll accomplish your goals with a great sense of satisfaction.

Continued success to you!

Why is such an important question,  in life and in business, and perhaps not asked enough. And some answers can be pretty compelling.

I loved this post from start to finish but particularly liked this statement - "The why is what drives you to do what you do. It's your purpose. Your cause. And your belief.

Hi, Jeff Dowler, CRS, if you're like me, you know why you enjoy working in the "people" business (from HR to Real estate). I have changed my professions relating to the real estate industry, but I have never changed "why" I continue to work in the "people" business.

My purpose, cause, and belief stay the same despite career change.

In everyday life we all have a WHY for the things we do.

I remember when my daughter and i owned a Curves for Women (exercise to music around a circuit) -- every woman who came into our club was asked their WHY do you want to become a member? Each why was different: Going to the prom, getting married, to get in shape so clothes fit more comfortably, strengthening the upper core, wanting to be able to get on the floor to play with grandchidren, ... oh the list goes on and on.  It's the same for everyone.  We have to have a WHY to move to the next step and DO.

Thank you for sharing this post.  Loved it and it brought back so many great memories.

Diana Dahlberg: I went to Curves when we lived in Cleveland, OH. And it was wonderful to be around those motivated by positive results. Whenever I thought of skipping the session, I was reminded of "why" I started.

Thank you for your comment.

Great Blog and awesome comments!

Why I missed this blog until now is an easy answer...I have not been on AR as much due to being busy with my agents.

Why?  Because I have locked on to 4 agents over the past few years that are becoming legends in their communities helping buyers and sellers with their real estate needs.  However, busy agents that are in the business less than 5 years have a lot of Why's and other issues that they have never experienced like those of us in the business for decades.

But man am I having fun!! Why? Because I get paid a small percentage of their professional fees and they become successful and knowledgeable along with incredible well earned commissions.  I treat them the opposite of how I was treated when I was first licensed and it is paying dividends.

Thank you for reminding of us of the Why factor!! It is huge and I will use it with my agents!!

Endre Barath, Jr. You know, I learned the hard way in corporate life: "I don't always go along to get along." And this character didn't bode well in the corporate business. So, I got out of that culture and became someone looking from the outside. And that suits me.

At some point in our lives, we will have to "stand alone." When we are clear about who we are and believe strongly about our worth, we stop "negotiating" our true selves in exchange for the need to "belong."

Hey, you inspired me to write a post about this "belonging" thing. Ha! I'll chat with you via email later.
