"Keep your eyes on the Stars, but your feet on the ground." — Theodore Roosevelt.
Kids have a never-ending list of why questions. Why is the grass green? Why do I have to eat broccoli? Why do I have to go to school? As we grow older, we become less curious about finding the answers to these questions.
Still, asking yourself "Why" once every while is essential. Whether in your personal life or business, exploring your meaning and purpose can make all the difference.
Why Asking "Why" Is Essential
Years ago, I attended and listened to Simon Sinek, author of "Start with Why," which made a splash with his presentation at a TEDx Talk. He focused on business and personal life and why asking "Why" is essential.
Sinek believes that everyone knows what they do, many know how they do it, but few know why. However, he argues that knowing our "Why" is at the core of our success.
The why is what drives you to do what you do. It's your purpose. Your cause. And your belief.
Sinek calls it "The Golden Circle," which starts with "Why" in the circle's heart, followed by How and What.
Examples Of Successful "Whys"
Steve Jobs and his partners created Apple by marketing their "Why." People stood in line for hours and days for some to buy Apple's first iPhone. Why? Because it gave an emotional spark and pride to those, who wanted to be part of the "first." Apple told them why it believed its first iPhone offered the breakthrough in the smartphone innovation no one else did. People believed in what Apple believed.
It says Apple doesn't have customers; it has fans!
As one of the civil rights leaders Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. inspired those, who believed in his "Why." King believed in his "dream" and not a plan. The word "dream" had an emotional impact and planted fervent hope in 250,000 people who showed up to listen to Dr. King.
They were the people touched and inspired by Dr. King's profound and inspiring words in his powerful "I have a dream" speech.
Why Your "Why" Matters
Whatever you do must have a purpose, and it doesn't have to be anything significant. If you have the answer, moving forward will be much easier.
Reaching your goals won't be a walk in the park. To make your dreams come true, you will need to put in a lot of effort and time. Most people fail to reach their goals because they lack an intense and emotional "Why" to fuel the "fire in the belly" that must be kept burning!
Your "Why" is your purpose and reason for being, and the core belief motivates you to take action and achieve your goals.
Your "Why" is the North Star that guides you through life. No matter how dark or stormy your path may await, if you keep your eyes on the Stars, you'll always arrive at your desired destination. Just Believe!
So, find Your "Why" and let it be your source of strength and inspiration for your success. Enjoy the ride!
