Commuting Guide for Crofton Newbies

By
Real Estate Agent with Long & Foster Real Estate, Inc.

GPSCrofton's location is one of the reasons many people chose to live in the community.  When the traffic gods are smiling, it's less than an hour to most places residents have to go on a daily basis.

With Route 50 for East-West travel and Route 3 for North-South travel, and both the D.C. and Baltimore Beltways within a half hour, it really is a commuter's heaven - if there is such a thing.  With so many people heading towards D.C., it's a bonus that the sun will be at your back, and not in your eyes, both on the way to and home from work.

A prospective Crofton resident contacted me this week to ask what the commuting time would be for her husband to downtown Washington.  That inspired me to put together this little directory for anyone relocating to the area.  The origination point for these destinations is the Crofton Village Green, in old Crofton.

Margaret, that is a great table to illustrate the central location of Crofton. Location, location, location. With today's gas prices and everyone's always valuable time a great advantage for living there. Excellent presentation.

Margaret:  This a great idea for people unfamiliar with the area.  Commuting is such a big issue around here.  I have been recommending that people unfamiliar with a particular town's commute, spend the money and rent a hotel room and give the commute a shot.  It's well worth the money.

Margaret  Great information.  Do you have slug lines in your area?  Gas prices have made them very much in demand in NoVA,  Karen

Margaret, this is a very clean, professional and useful post for people moving to the Crofton area.  I haven't driven from Crofton to other areas around the D.C. metro region, but I would likely caution that the warning on your chart that

"Commuting time may be longer due to rush hour, bad weather, road construction or an accident"

probably applies 85-90% of the time!

Brian, as you said, you have not driven from Crofton to other areas around the D.C. metro region, and I have to rebut your statement that rush hour, bad weather, road construction or an accident "probably appplies 85-90% of the time" -  That is just plain wrong!

My husband worked in Crystal City (near the Pentagon in Northern Virginia) for about 20 years, and his commute was routinely 45 minutes to work, and 45-60 minutes coming home.  He worked with many people who lived in various parts of Northern Virginia whose commutes took much longer because of heavier traffic in Virginia PLUS sun in their eyes both coming and going.   This summer, when I've driven to Arlington to babysit for my grandson, I have planned on an hour and always gotten there sooner.

The routes to non-D.C. destinations are not nearly as heavily travelled and far less likely to have those issues. Certainly NOT most of the time!
