Today's Food For Thought: What We Can Learn About Life From Art

"I dream of painting, and then I paint my dream."  Vincent van Gogh

When it comes to expressions of the human experience, Art is King. No form of communication is more potent, dynamic, or purer than artwork. Whether it's a painting, a sculpture, a photograph, a song, or a dance, Art can touch us in ways that nothing else can.

The Unspoken Teacher

Art is an educator that teaches us about life and is one of the most powerful and unspoken teachers. No matter your mother tongue or where you come from, Art is something that is universally understood.

Art is the barest expression of our emotions and feeling without using words. And it is often the truest form of expression.

It can be so powerful because it isn't filtered through words.

How Art Communicates Without Words

We all communicate through language, and sometimes we experience language barriers.

But Art is a way to communicate without words.

It speaks to us deeper, bypassing the rational mind and going straight to our hearts. That's why we can feel emotions so powerfully when we experience Art  because it's communicating with us in a way that no other form of communication can.

We can glimpse the artist's soul when we look at a painting or listen to a song. We can see their innermost thoughts and feelings without ever having to say a word.

And beyond just helping us to understand ourselves, Art can also inspire us to reach for our dreams. It can help us to discover new passions and possibilities that we never knew existed.

Art is truly the gateway to the soul, and it can teach us more about life than we could ever learn from words alone.

So, What Can We Learn About Life From Art?

For one, we can understand that it is full of endless possibilities and potential. Just like us, no two pieces of Art are the same. Even replicas of famous pieces never fully resemble their originators. The nuances that exist in the original can never be copied or redone because each piece reflects the artist's soul. One soul.

When we create Art, we put a part of ourselves into the world. We are sharing our innermost thoughts and feelings with others in a raw and vulnerable way.

This act of sharing is scary but also incredibly unrecompensed. It allows us to connect on a deeper raw level. And helps us perceive the world in new and different ways.

Art teaches us that there is not one right way of doing things. It shows us that we all have unique perspectives and experiences, making each memorable and exciting.

We can learn to respect and appreciate others for their differences instead of trying to force them to conform to our narrow view of the world.

And finally, Art teaches us that life is full of emotion. It is a way to express what we feel deeply, but it can't be put into words.

Art is one of the most important things that we have in life. It is a way for us to express ourselves, connect with others, and learn about the world around us.

"Make your lives a masterpiece; you only get one canvas." — E.A. Bucchianeri.

Writer's Comment: They say Asking is an Art, and asking for inspiration is something else. You have to learn where to look or ask someone. Carol Williams suggested this subject about Art, which inspired me to write and share this post with you. Thank you, Carol.  — Aura Alex

There are many forms of “art” that for some reason, I am unable to relate to. Abstract paintings, for example.

Not filtering through words leaves our minds/brains to interpret from our experience absent the influence of words.  Words can be so misunderstood.

When we feel with our heart it touches us deeply … as you say “gateway to the soul.”

Yes, to respecting differences!

We are energetic beings. E-M-O-T-I-O-N … is energy in motion.

There are many times I feel something I cannot explain in words.

Does life imitate Art – or does Art imitate life?

Kathleen Daniels, Probate & Trust Specialist: I didn't understand abstract paintings at first until I tried them a few times. I still can't relate to some abstract art because I cannot interpret others' thoughts and expressions not reminiscent of mine.

I adore that phrase: EMOTION is energy in motion! Sometimes I have profound emotions about things; yes, I often cannot explain them in words. Perhaps those moments were not meant to be shared, and only I could feel them.

Does life imitate Art, or does Art imitate life? This is a 64 million-dollar question, like "chicken and the egg." We create music and songs with lyrics describing emotions derived from experience, and we feel or relive the emotion that the music brings. So, it's fair to say Art (music) imitates life.

But Oscar Wilde would disagree. For me, it depends!

The subject of Art suggested by Miss Carol Williams was so intriguing to me as many people are unaware that there are other art forms surrounding our lives other than painting and drawing.

I am happy for the feature and thankful for your support.

Aura,

In high school wood shop, I once made a mahogany duck.   That's my claim to artistic fame.  It's been mostly stick figures since.

If I could magically bestow myself with an artistic talent, it would be cartoon drawing.    I suspect caption-writing is a mild talent of mine.   When I was studying for the bar exam, the Orange County Register published weekly cartoons in need of a caption.    The winner's names would be published.   I entered a caption five consecutive weeks and had a winning caption three times.    Once in a blue moon, a caption would pop into in my head, and the attendant cartoon would be crafted in my mind's eye.   It's frustrating when you can see it but can't bring it to life.   So, it just becomes a fleeting thought.

Your post triggered this memory, which I haven't thought about it in years.  It was such a fun thing during the not-so-fun 8 weeks of studying.   Thank you for that!

I loved your reply to Brian England.   You're so dang persuasive.   I would add one more thought to your argument:   His Tesla is a piece of art!

Brian L. Sirota, Esq. Somehow I am not surprised to learn about your artistic talent. You're good with words, and to come up with caption-writing, must be fun and creative. No doubt.

Interestingly, Jim used to participate in caption-writing for The New Yorker, in which the cartoons were presented with no captions. Some cartoons showed spoken words as a clue for a caption. The selected caption would appear on the following subscription with the winner's name. I remember vaguely that a few of his captions were selected, and he has probably forgotten about them.

I took a few art classes for oil painting and ink drawing but was never really serious about pursuing more than a hobby. I tried voice lessons and singing later in life, but my daughter (a YMCA camp singer) told me I should keep my day job! LOL! That was the last 15-second fame for me!! 😂

I agree that Brian England's Tesla is a piece of Art! My son-in-law's brother lives in Orange County, too, and he comes up here once in a while driving his Tesla and enjoying his "Digital Nomad" lifestyle!

It's good to see you still alive and kicking! Brian.

Thought provoking and reminds me of a quote by Hannah Arendet "'Storytelling reveals meaning without committing the error of defining it.'

One could replace "storytelling" with "art" because each of us see something different, when viewing art as well as the emotions we may feel.

Leanne Smith: that's a lovely quote you shared. Thank you.

Yes, works of art often tell stories. A good artist can tell stories imbued with personal meaning which resonate with their audience and create a connection.

A lot of deep thoughts there, and I loved the video you posted with this. Having been an antiques dealer I dealt with art, and objects, and I loved what I did. It was fun to see people connect with something.

Hello, Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543: I love that the post brings more meaningful conversations and learn more about the readers.

I'm intrigued by your love for antiques because it's something I admit I lack a deep understanding of why some people are so emotionally attached to their beloved objects or materials other than they continue to cherish the story behind their possessions.

Such a very thoughtful post, Aura and I love your message. Life does imitate art and vice versa too.

I've never had an artistic bone in my body but, I surely do appreciate those who do - and in a variety of style too; I'm the same with music. Perhaps my inability to do anything artistic or musical opened the door for me to be open-minded to others? We never know!

Have a lovely day!

Hi, Debe Maxwell, CRS: there are plenty of artistic ways of doing things, and it doesn't mean we have to be able to play music, paint art, etc.

Your success in leadership and ability to influence those following you is an art. Perhaps it's an art of selling and influencing; the list goes on.

Thank you for your presence and comment. 🥰

Hi Aura I was enjoying your crappy conversation with Kathleen Daniels, Probate & Trust Specialist !  Another unique form of art in word play!  Oh Sh** did I just say that!  I had an interesting experience with our  art work this past Saturday.  We shift things around quite often - whenever it feels right to me.  We had a lot of people over and I don't think I've ever had so many guests asking me if we had purchased new art.  Of course I didn't but it felt like that to them. They loved  the feeling!  The  art placement brought out  the incredible beauty of the fall season.  Some said....it just feels so good here.  One guy said - how do you do this - can you do my house?! They were definitely in and artsy mood! And....it does look 'happy'!!  Wonderful post my dear!!

Anna Banana Kruchten CRS, Phoenix Broker: my friends told me that I had a knack to bring the "crap" out of people. Can you believe that?

I'm glad you were in an artsy mood. And it was a good thing that you created "the feeling." Now, that's one of your artistic talents. Art is all about "feeling." Home is where you're comfortable.

For me, I feel at home when I'm in a kayak on the Puget Sound water watching the sunset!!

Oh being on the water is wonderful Aura!  I grew up on a lake and have many found memories of lake life.  So you have a knack of bringing the crap out of people.......another artistic skill!!

I love this, Aura. Art is all around us...I admire Mother Nature's work of art every morning when we are out. The ability to elicit an emotion or feeling, no matter how small means that a work touched some part of you.

When I hear music or see a dance, it doesn't matter if the person speaks my language or another. Feelings are universal. Art can give us a thread of connection even if only for a moment and that is so needed now.

Oct 29, 2022 01:58 PM
Aura Alex

Aww, Kathy Streib, as always, so beautiful words from you. We are all connected to Mother Nature in many ways. The air we breathe, the animals or insects help produce the food we eat. A walk in nature is a mindful way to connect with the energy of the Earth.

Humans have an innate desire to be with other lives, like trees and animals.

I, too, love music and the emotion music brings. I agree that music is universal, and it doesn't matter how it plays or in what language.

What would the world and our lives be like without Art? Let's hope that it's the question we will never have to find the answer to!

Hi Aura - my mother was an artist and my early years were spent visiting art museums with may parents.  My mother would explain to me the feelings in the painters brush strokes.

Hi, Grant Schneider. Sometimes it takes another artist to "feel" others' work. My husband and I share a love of Art; come to think of it, that was where we spent our first date.

Hi Aura:

This post really spoke to me as an art lover (but with limited artistic talent), art collector, and former art gallery owner with my wife back in the Boston area. We always enjoyed talking with visitors to the gallery to hear about their thoughts about the works of art we offered - what they liked and why, or didn't, what their emotional experience was, what they saw, and so on. Each visitor had their own individual interpretations, thoughts and ideas, as well as thought about the art they liked and didn't.

Such is the beauty of art in our world. There really is no right or wrong.
