Ask An Ambassador: Blogging Tap Running Dry?

By

It happens to every blogger sooner or later.  You're sitting at the keyboard...and sitting...and sitting.  Nothing but blank space.

How do you break the blogging block and get the flow going again?

The ideas are out there, it's mostly a matter of tuning in and finding something that sparks your interest.

Maybe you just need to blog ANYTHING just to break the block, or maybe you still want to blog for your target audience and keep your blogging time productive, but there are choices out there, but where??

For starters, here are some sources:

All those real estate newsletters and magazines you get?  Ideas can be found to tailor to your local market.

Blasts from the local builders about an incentive?  A new phase of a community?  A new community?  New floor plans?  A sale on a market home?  All prime material and considering some builders aren't so great on SEO, an opportunity for you to get a page 1 spot.

Clients.  Experiences, questions, recent events, all can be applied in ways to be useful without so much detail that Mr. X knows you're writing about HIM.

What is your local government doing that impacts real estate?  New taxes?  Zoning changes?

Your blogging archives.  What are your best performing posts for making your phone ring?  Time for a refresh?  Can you write something similar (e.g. cover another community with the same approach)?

Market reports.  Who doesn't want to know the latest on prices going up or down and how long it takes to sell?

Numbered tip lists.  7 Ways To Sell Your Home Faster, 3 Things To Improve Your Offer, etc.

Your photos.  Seen anything interesting lately?  A picture is worth a 1000 words, even if you stop at 300 :)

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions).  What do you get asked time and again?  Homestead exemptions? The buying process? Best _______ in (insert place)?

Favorite places.  Where do you go when you want a great burrito?  Pizza?  Chinese?  Parks.  Dog parks.  Skate parks.  Local amenities can be used to add some flavor to your blog.

Events.  Festivals.  Air shows.  Free concerts.  Farmers' markets.

There's plenty to work with.  Some will make your phone ring, some won't, but all can get your blogging flow back on schedule.

Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador if you need help,

Bill & Liz aka BLiz

Hello Bill (and Liz too) - blogging drought is very real.  As you express, searching your personal AR archives can lead to inspiration as can comments left in those posts.   In reality, all sorts of ideas are "out there" and ripe for picking.  Never easy but the bounty can be found.  Deep digging and reaching higher helps.

When daily blogging was my thing, I rarely had a day that I couldn't readily find a topic.  Now finding a topic that I WANTED to blog was a whole different game.  Sometimes mood doesn't match and a post in the wrong tone can be damaging.  Kick to the delete can and start over.

Good points Bill! There are many days when my mind says “I have nothing”. I do go to photos, read the news, look at old posts, even quotes! This often helps

The ideas are out there, and the more we blog, the easier I think it gets to make it a routine.

Hi Liz and Bill. To open up the blog tap... "Baby the Rain Must Fall", the AR rain that is, but Glenn Yarbrough's version is great also.

I have to admit to being in a bit of a drought. We have to care enough to come up with ideas, and sometimes it's just like, 'ehhhh'. I'm in an 'ehhhh' period. Hopefully soon I'll snap out of it!

But you've created enough foundational posts that you can have an 'ehhhh' period.  When you're ready, you'll add to it.

Hi BIll:

I suspect it happens to each of us at one time or another when the blogging idea well seems to run dry. This is a great list of potential ideas, any of which could generate other ideas, too! And depending on your target audience it doesn't HAVE to be real estate related!

Jeff

True, if you've got a large following already established, you can veer off the real estate topics.

I know it has happened to me but lately I've missed several days because of moving my address... now I have the opposite problem as I had a lot of ideas stored up.

There can be a bit of a feast or famine with blogging.  Some days I'd have a week+ worth of ideas at the ready.

Hi Bill,
I know some people do get bloggers block but I never did.

I don't blog regularly these days, but I never actually ran out of ideas. When I was blogging daily, the thing I found to make it easier to choose a topic was to have a theme for each day of the week. It also helped me batch write and I'd schedule posts to be published on the appropriate day. That way I didn't actually have to write every day if I had other stuff going on.

I rarely wrote in advance, although I might have topics lined up to cover and would scratch them off the list as they were done.

Liz and Bill Spear  You are right but there are times my fingers just do not want to do the walking and my mind well in a brick - then suddenly something opens up - I think it may be writers block

Nov 02, 2022 11:34 AM

I think we all have times we just don't feel like using the keyboard.  Maybe it's topic choice, maybe just a bit of too much to do, but eventually that goes away and we get back to it.

Hi Bliz I don't recall be 'BTO" #blogtappedout!!  There are so many, many things to write about. I'm not blogging on a regular basis anymore but both Gary and i will stop and say - wow that would make a great blog topic!

I think we train ourselves to be receptive to those ideas.  The more we blog, the easier it gets.
