Motivational Monday…It Helps to Take Your Blinders Off
Whether you are an athlete playing for the top prize, a business person wanting to grow your company, or average “joes” like you and me wanting to make your way through life…you’ve always been told to focus on the goal.
This weekend I listened to a sports analyst discuss the importance of taking the blinders off. His point was that while it is crucial that we set our focus on doing what we need to do to get where we want to be, we must remember that at some point we need to take our blinders off.
If we keep our blinders on…trained only on our goal, all we see is what’s in front of us. To some extent, that’s necessary. Ask many successful people and they will tell you that being focused on the task is what is necessary to reach your desired target.
However, there are times when we need to take off those blinders and look around us…look where we’ve been.
If you’re selling homes, concentrating solely on how many listings you can sign, look around.
Know where your region is headed. Is your niche neighborhood or product undergoing a change? Are there alternate marketing methods that may be a better fit for you?
What market changes are around the bend? In 2008, there were many agents running to learn about short sales and foreclosures.
Don’t forget to take a look behind you. You may be #1 in your field or area, but there is always someone behind you who would love to wave bye to you in their rearview mirror.
This doesn’t mean you need to follow what every other peer is doing. Not at all. Do what’s working for you…add to it…eliminate what no longer works.
What it does mean is that FOCUS is a good thing to have but make sure that where you are heading is where you need and want to be.
