Motivational Monday…It Helps to Take Your Blinders Off

Whether you are an athlete playing for the top prize, a business person wanting to grow your company, or average “joes” like you and me wanting to make your way through life…you’ve always been told to focus on the goal.

This weekend I listened to a sports analyst discuss the importance of taking the blinders off.  His point was that while it is crucial that we set our focus on doing what we need to do to get where we want to be, we must remember that at some point we need to take our blinders off.

If we keep our blinders on…trained only on our goal, all we see is what’s in front of us. To some extent, that’s necessary. Ask many successful people and they will tell you that being focused on the task is what is necessary to reach your desired target.

However, there are times when we need to take off those blinders and look around us…look where we’ve been.

If you’re selling homes, concentrating solely on how many listings you can sign, look around.

Know where your region is headed. Is your niche neighborhood or product undergoing a change?  Are there alternate marketing methods that may be a better fit for you?

What market changes are around the bend? In 2008, there were many agents running to learn about short sales and foreclosures.

Don’t forget to take a look behind you. You may be #1 in your field or area, but there is always someone behind you who would love to wave bye to you in their rearview mirror.

This doesn’t mean you need to follow what every other peer is doing. Not at all.  Do what’s working for you…add to it…eliminate what no longer works.

What it does mean is that FOCUS is a good thing to have but make sure that where you are heading is where you need and want to be

The farther backward you can look, the farther forward you can see. Winston Churchill

Good morning! Great point. We need to keep aware of what's going on around us, as we focus on that goal

Hi Kat Palmiotti I'm reminded of the swimmer, in their lane, heading for the target or wall, who has no idea who's next to them or coming up from behind.

Hi Kathy,
I could go so many ways with this post. Being a sports fan, like you, we both know athletes need to know what is going on around them (even behind them). If they focus only on the goal, they're going to get brought down or put out. When it comes to history, we need to know what has happened in the past to know what NOT to do. Erasing our memory of it is a sure path to disaster.

Couldn't agree more Carol Williams We have to know our history and understand what we did wrong and did right.  It's frightening to think that our history is not being taught...or maybe it's being taught but it's some versions of it.

Hello Kathy - I can "see" the purpose of blinders.  But beyond the obvious, I sense there may be some horseplay underfoot.  Hey (or is it, Hay???) I tried to make it connect.

Good morning Kathy,

Especially at this time of the year its good to look back at your year, who did you work with? Where did your business come from? How did your year compare to the last 3? Measurement is important to then have clear focus on where you are going and what you want to achieve.

Dorie Dillard Austin TX absolutely. People are planning for the coming year and if you don't review what you did, what worked and what didn't, then you could find yourself going nowhere.

Hi Kathy,

Another way to look at taking the blinders off is to be able to show different points of reference. But not just that, we also need to understand what those points of reference are and how to adjust to them.  Great post today!

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® very true. Walking "blindly" towards your goal, without reviewing reference points is not a good thing!!!
