Canyon Creek HOA ~ Test Driving Eco Friendly Vegetation Managment

By
Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Realty ~ 512.750.6899

The Canyon Creek HOA is trying something new to clear dense brush and reduce the risk of wildfire to our community homes and property. They are test driving a eco-friendly green and sustainable approach to vegetation management. After this project concludes, the HOA will assess the results to determine if this project should be expanded in future years.

The HOA is conducting a limited pilot project with Rent-A-Ruminant to clear dense brush using goats in the greenbelt area between Chestnut Ridge and Yorktown Trail. This project is expected to last 2-3 days. Rent-A-Ruminant Texas will be visiting our Canyon Creek neighborhood between the dates of November 14 and November 19.

Goats have proven to be an effective method of wildfire risk management by reducing understory vegetation that can act as a ladder fuel, allowing a ground fire to transition to a much more destructive canopy fire.

Rent-ARuminant is experienced in urban wildfire risk reduction through its work under contract with Travis County’s fire department and the Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center.

The Rent-A-Ruminant staff will be on-site with the goats 24/7 while they are working and moving the goats through the intended grazing plots. You may hear a lawn mower or brush cutter from time to time as we will be making paths to run the portable electric fencing down. You may also occasionally hear the goats talking, and you may even hear the team talking to the goats.

Here are some things to know about the goat's visit...

Please do not touch the fence!

We use temporary electrified fencing to protect our herd. It keeps the goats concentrated on grazing specific areas and keeps predators out.

Please do not feed the goats!

The goats are here to do important work. Introducing snacks or treats to their diet can be dangerous and even fatal. We ask that you please refrain from feeding the goats anything as even some plant species can be harmful.

Please do not pet the goats!

The goats do eat vegetation such as poison ivy or poison oak. This oil does get on their coat and can be passed on to anyone touching them.

Please do not leave your dogs unattended during these few days while the goats are working.

Please keep all gates closed that lead into the greenbelt.

This area is to be cleared by Rent-A-Ruminant (greenbelt runs in back of Chestnut Ridge Rd and Yorktown Trail):

Thank you, Canyon Creek HOA, for being innovated and trying this limited pilot project. Will look forward to hearing the results!

Hi Dorie- I love this idea!!!! It sounds like a smart way to keep the brush low and in an eco-friendly way!!!  I wonder if areas that are heavily impacted by wildfires utilize this??

Hi Kathy Streib ,

One of the reasons they are trying it is because it was so dry and hot this summer. They are concerned with fires..it could prove to to work to keep the brush down so fires can't start.

We have been using goats in many areas of Sacramento and surrounding counties for awhile now.  I am often amazed at how efficient those animals are.  And, it's so environmentally friendly.

Hi Dorie, I watched one of your youtube videos about Canyon Creek. Great job using Shorts! So many agents miss the opportunity to use that.  Did you see my post on repurpose.io? I have used to syndicate  my tiktoks to Youtube and various other socials. It's a huge  time saver.
