Education & Training with Performance Development Strategies

Are you a leader who gets things done? Or are you talking the talk but not walking the walk? You may be practicing all the right management and leadership styles, but real beef is in the RESULTS.

If you start by defining the results needed or the goals you wish to accomplish you can then grow the people and processes to ensure those results! This commonsense leadership style is called the Result-Based Model of Leadership.

Here is an example of how you can align your entire team to your goals.

It begins with setting goals through your organization's strategic plan that is focused on your vision. Here is where you can define the desired results from your team members.

It continues by aligning the people and the processes to ensure its realization. The goal is to have all your operations linked to the plan. Then virtually everything that happens in a company works purposefully toward achieving that Plan (Vision).

I have found, in working with my Westchester County NY business owners, that this Fail-Safe, Results-Based Leadership model is a winner every time it is tried. Once you accept this Results-Based Leadership model, you must next commit to leadership development processes that aggressively grow people to achieve the strategic direction of your company.

One of the single biggest reasons why Leaders fail to lead is the absence of effective leadership development processes that ALLOW them to lead!

An effective leadership development process is purposely designed to incorporate that clear strategic direction for your company and aligned to your operating systems to ensure achieving your desired results.

This first step is to create alignment between the goals of the individual staff members and the overall vision of the company. When that happens, positive results are more likely to occur.

The Leadership Team must:

  • Establish a Vision Statement - Who or where you want your company to be in the future (3 to 5 years).
  • Establish a Mission Statement - What must be done in year one to move to achieve the vision.
  • Create Critical Success Factors - Four to eight items that are necessary and sufficient to achieve the mission.
  • Establish Goals - that are necessary and sufficient to accomplish the critical success factors.
  • Offer a Specific Action Plan - these steps accomplish the goals in terms of WHO does WHAT by WHEN.

Creating the framework for alignment is the leadership task. Now the team.

Every team member MUST:

  • Understand his or her own action steps to accomplish the Vision.
  • Be supported with the required resources.
  • Have processes in place that ensure productivity, innovation, and speed.

Then and only then is the organization aligned and truly in a position to succeed. Many leaders of companies as well as small business owners fail to use this process. In some cases, the leader holds control and delegates responsibility. This might work in some cases but if you want your organization to grow you must empower the team. Only then will the sales and profits of your organization grow to their fullest potential.  For a similar post on our web site see ARE YOU A RESULTS ORIENTED LEADER?

A leader definitely has to walk the walk in order to be followed by others they are trying to lead.

Unfortunately Grant, I have worked for a couple of "leaders" who had no concept of how to treat others and how to get results. They were only after in shaping their own careers!

Nina - yes, that's right is sure does.

Wayne - for some that is so true it is much easier said than done.

Joan - that is right you are a team leader now.

Brian - that is lead by example.

Ed - that is another reason everyone is aligned.

Michae l- communication is the biggest problem.  It must happen regularly.

Joe - thank you, I appreciate your input.

Mark - those are two very important reasons right now.

Sheila - in that case they were just bosses but not leaders.

George - that is a cardinal rule of management.

Wanda - yes, that is true.  Be there to support.

Hi Grant- your advice is always so useful and not just for those with teams. For someone to lead, it's not about being a top producer or having the most listings or sales. Leaders must have a special gift of being able to lead from the front.
