Today we stopped by the Trail to see these beauties: The Jaguars

Many people are surprised to learn that jaguars are native to Arizona. In fact, their range once spanned from Argentina to the southern United States, including portions of California, New Mexico, Texas and Louisiana. In Arizona, they could be found as far north as the Grand Canyon.

In recent decades, however, there’s been an uptick. Seven male jaguars, members of a population in Sonora, Mexico, were recorded in the mountains of southeast Arizona in the years from 1996 to 2021. In addition, two young males, Valero and El Bonito, have been photographed traveling just south of the U.S./Mexico border multiple times since 2019.

In the 1800s, as ranchers and homesteaders made their way west, the federal government promoted campaigns to eliminate large predators from the landscape. By the 20th century, jaguar populations were devastated, and sightings were few and far between. Males were only seen sporadically, and the last female was killed in Arizona’s White Mountains in 1963.

Good morning Bill. Man has to learn to live with animals native to the terrain. Or, extinction will occur. Enjoy your day.

Such gorgeous creatures, jaguars, Bill! Then again, I'm a sucker for any member of the feline family. When I go to a zoo, my first stop is always to see the big cats.

What beautiful animals, and what a shame they were eradicated, maybe like the wolves we might see a program to reintroduce them to the landscape and see similar positive results to the environment as well. It is fascinating to see the evidence of how the wolves have changed the habitat for the better.

Hi Bill- I didn't know that Jaguars were in AZ!!!   They are so beautiful and I'm so happy to see that through conservation they still have a presence.
