Wordless Wednesday…It’s Not About the Size

Do you remember the first Christmas tree you bought?  It seems that with each year and each new home our tree got bigger and bigger.

I’ll always remember, though, the first Christmas tree Larry and I had…I didn’t have to get on a stool to decorate the top of the tree!

This tree is at Kickerillo where we walk. I don’t know who decorates it or when it began but it represents what the holidays mean to me.

My parent’s neighbor gave us two boxes of ornaments and I hand-painted small wooden ornaments I’d found at a craft store. It wasn't that we couldn’t afford to go out and buy decorations for the tree, we wanted to make it our own. I didn’t want to have a tree that looked as if it came out of a showroom.

Christmas isn’t about the size of your tree…it’s about the size of the heart that decorated it.

Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas.

Calvin Coolidge

He who has not Christmas in his heart will never find it under a tree.Roy L. Smith

What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store. What if Christmas… perhaps… means a little bit more! Dr. Seuss, How the Grinch Stole Christmas!

Good morning Kathy. When I was young we lived in a typical Chicago bungalow. The living room dining room combination was not large. A customer of my father dealt in Christmas trees and wanted to give him special one. It was a white flock huge tree my parents hated. The following year my dad got our own tree. Enjoy your day

I love the Dr Seuss quote! We had a live tree growing up, and we would decorate it on Christmas Eve. When we were young, we'd string popcorn and cranberries and hang them on the tree. Nice memories!

Kat Palmiotti you had an idyllic childhood!!! I think we strung popcorn once when I was growing up! Only then it was because I’d read about it and wanted to try it

Good morning, Kathy... the first Christmas tree I could afford was the Christmas after I finished graduate school. It was maybe 3 feet tall. Now I have trees of all sizes. When we were children, my mother would decorate our tree overnight in early December and we'd wake up to a beautiful tree full of sparkling German glass ornaments.

Hello Kathy - I remember buying a Christmas tree when I was a child maybe in third or fourth grade.  It was artificial and small enough to fit on top of my dresser in my room.  I am not sure where I got the ornaments.   If I recall correctly, I rearranged my room so the decorated tree could be seen to passersby.

Never forget ours, newly married living off base in West Germany.  My German landlord took me out to cut a fresh one. He was a drinker so paid him for his time with a German Beer. At the Gashouse we stopped at several German Polizie came in. I learned cutting a tree without permission, you could be held Libel for all the value that tree could produce.  I noticed a small branch sticking out of my trunk. I held my breath, did not get into trouble. Lesson Learned

Good morning Kathy,

We always put up a real tree growing up and continued the practice when my kids were little. Now in our weather real ones can dry out quickly so we moved to pre-lite trees. I just got a new one for this year with 1,800 lights with a remote and I love it!

Dorie Dillard Austin TX when our dog went blind, we could no longer have a tall tree, so we opted for a 4 foot table top tree and have stayed with it.

I can't exactly recall my first tree, but I do recall one of my 12th trees. You see, I got a normal tree (7 foot tall) and I also got a 8 inch living tree. Within a year, a beloved pet bird died and so we buried her in my parents backyard and planted the living tree on top of her. The tree grew for many years and my dad even sculpted it like a large scale bonsai. I remember that tree well.

Hi Kathy,

Our Christmas trees kept getting bigger as well.  In fact, I might have been influenced to buy a home with very tall ceilings in our last California house just to accommodate a huge tree!

We have had a real tree for most of our 50 years together. However, this year we got a Balsam Hill tree.  It is only 4.5 feet tall!  It is on a coffee table. It is up, and Rick can put the tree Angel on without a ladder.  I will have leftover ornaments this year.  I do agree that the spirit of Christmas is about the size of the heart that decorates it.

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® we've had a table top since our Brittany went blind and couldn't have the tree on the floor. I love it because it's easy to do.

Kathy when my two boys were growing up we would put up a fairly good size tree, but now with just my wife and I, we put up a table top size tree just to kind of have a little of the holiday feeling.

Hi Kathy trying to find Christmas in a store.....what a concept. And I know that's where some folks are and teach their kids that as well.  To me and Gary, Christmas is in our Hearts. For me it's always special, more special than most others I imagine,  as I was born on Christmas Eve!

We've had big trees and small trees and more trees and less trees! Whatever in the mood for each year is how it goes for us.  And it's all so beautiful and full of Christmas spirit. And one year my niece was living with us and she asked if she could decorate 5 or 6 trees.....of course you can!  We had purple trees, polka dot tree, you name it and it was a forest of beauty that year!  Wish I could find pictures of that year!
