Ready to Cut Down This Year's Christmas Tree?

Which tree to choose?

It once again is that time of year when you start thinking about the Christmas Tree.     The U.S. Forest Service sells annual permits for those adventurous individuals that want to pick out their very own Christmas Tree.    There are designated areas in which the trees must be cut down.   At this time, you will only be able to cut a tree down in the Red Feather Lakes region or Winter Park.  The other areas are sold out.    Tree-cutting permits will be available from 12/5 to 12/13/15.

Cutting a Christmas tree also improves forest health.  the permit system helps to thin densely populated stands of small-diameter trees.  Local forest health experts identify areas that benefit from thinning trees that tend to be the perfect size for Christmas trees.  Removing these trees in designated areas helps other trees grow larger and can open areas that provide forage for wildlife.

You can pick up your permit in the region you are cutting down the tree.   In most areas - it is $20.00 per tree.    Here is the information that will show you where you can find the US Forest Service Office.   More information on Tree Cutting.

If your family has never cut down a live tree, the kids probably will never forget this experience!

Here are a couple of nursery options (in SE Denver) where you will find pre-cut Christmas trees -

Pine Lane Nursery - 18200 Apache Drive, Parker, CO  80134  303-841-3009

Nick's Garden Center - 2001 S. Chambers Road, Aurora, CO  80014  303-696-6657

Frank's Neighborhood Christmas Trees - Southlands Shopping Center, Aurora  720-840-0515

Jolly Christmas Trees - 4258 S. Parker Road, Aurora, CO  720-939-6612

Happy Christmas Tree shopping!

How cool is that, Joan! And in this day of inflation, a $10-20 permit is quite the bargain for a Christmas tree.

Bill, not sure how much the real trees are in the lots, but to cut your own down for $20 sounds reasonable!

It is so much fun to go cut down your own tree and the thinning process is healthy.  I remember a few years ago going to the Sequoia National Park, the home of the world's largest trees.  We were overlooking a bluff and the park system had a plaque showing how the density of the trees had changed over time.  There used to be hundreds of trees per acre and now there are thousands of trees per acre.  It is one of our real problems in CA.  If a fire breaks out, it is almost impossible to stop.  The last few years have seen a number of fires kill many of those ancient Sequoia trees.

Ray Henson I would imagine it would be very helpful to cut down some trees in your parks, with all your fires every year.

As much as I love a live Christmas Tree, my husband is highly allergic so we always opt for a fake tree.  I just purchased a 12 foot tree for our living room and I LOVE it.  Great info, thanks for sharing.  Hope you have a fabulous day!

Norma J. Elkins that would be sad to be allergic to trees, but can imagine a fake one is just as beautiful in your home!

Hi Joan- I've never cut down my own Christmas tree but this looks like fun. I like the idea of the very inexpensive permit too.
