It once again is that time of year when you start thinking about the Christmas Tree. The U.S. Forest Service sells annual permits for those adventurous individuals that want to pick out their very own Christmas Tree. There are designated areas in which the trees must be cut down. At this time, you will only be able to cut a tree down in the Red Feather Lakes region or Winter Park. The other areas are sold out. Tree-cutting permits will be available from 12/5 to 12/13/15.
Cutting a Christmas tree also improves forest health. the permit system helps to thin densely populated stands of small-diameter trees. Local forest health experts identify areas that benefit from thinning trees that tend to be the perfect size for Christmas trees. Removing these trees in designated areas helps other trees grow larger and can open areas that provide forage for wildlife.
You can pick up your permit in the region you are cutting down the tree. In most areas - it is $20.00 per tree. Here is the information that will show you where you can find the US Forest Service Office. More information on Tree Cutting.
If your family has never cut down a live tree, the kids probably will never forget this experience!
