My Guide for Blogging Success…The “Not to Do” List

For my entry into this month’s December  2022  Challenge-A Guide for Blogging Success hosted by Jeff Dowler, CRS and Brian England, I decided to begin with what I would put on my “Not to Do” list.

Depending upon who you talk to the list could be long…very long but I decided to pick the things I think are important, no matter what direction you want your blog to take.

These are things that cause me to move on or never return.

The Wall of Words

With YouTube, videos, and audiobooks so popular, actually reading something often takes a back seat for consumers. The last thing people want to see when they click on your blog is a wall of words…even if you include a Feature Photo.

Bob Stewart in his ActiveRain webinars on blogging encouraged us to include white space in our blogs…space around photos, space between paragraphs…a place to rest our eyes while we read.

Insert photos or clip art to help break up the words and enhance the subject of your blog. Make sure that the photos you use are your own or ones you have permission to use. Need some help with photos?  Craig Daniels wrote an excellent tutorial for us.

By the way…here’s a link to an early post of mine that is not quite but almost a total wall of words.  Not very inviting.

The “Link to…” Only Blog

Ok, this is a personal pet peeve of mine, but if I take the time to go to your blog, I would rather read something other than “Here’s the link to ‘Whatever the topic is.’

At the very least, give us a paragraph of why we would benefit from going to the link and what it is about. Show us that you took the time other than throw a link up.

There are many other items on the “Not to Do” list, such as copying someone else’s post or font that is way too small to read, but that may be for another post.

The thing to remember is that whatever you write…it is always YOUR blog… YOUR choice of what you want to write… who YOUR target audience is, and how you want YOUR blog to look.

Kathy that is absolutely correct. Walls of words overwhelm the visual senses and stops us from absorbing as we are trying to find white space. I like to use bold face and pargaraph breaks. I also keep in mind people like visual aid so I try to use them when possible.  Thanks for the remiders. Have a terrific Tuesday!

Such great advice here with some fun old posts. I always try to limit my post to a short quick read. People do not come to AR to read War and Peace.

I rarely will stick around for a wall of words or a post that goes on far too long.

People don't have the time or patience.

Same here Sharon Tara I love to read the posts here but if it's too long, I put it off or don't read it at all.

Hello Kathy - blogging lessons continue.  And as far as pet peeves, whenever I hear mention of them, I am reminded of the quote by George Carlin (edited for family reading purposes but I know you can fill-in-the blanks):

I don't have pet peeves, I have major F#^$!%? annoyances.

Hi Kathy:

Thanks for your entry! There are plenty of things a blogger should not be doing and you have captured some of the worse offenses. I think in the early days of bogging people were more tolerant - there were fewer blog posts and it was new and exciting. Today...not so much.

Jeff

Hi Kathy,

As usual, you are sharing excellent advice with us.  As for white space, I try to include pics or at least a sub-heading or key phrase that describes the following paragraphs.  You do such a good job with white space.

The link-only blog really irritates me.  It is almost disrespectful because the "linker's time" is more valuable than mine.

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® That's exactly how I feel. It's as if they're throwing up a link and who cares after that.
