Looking At The Bigger Picture. . .

Looking at

The Bigger Picture. . .

It's about time: As the seconds become minutes and the minutes turn into hours, the end of the year continues to grow closer.  And once again, it’s coming much too quickly.

And speaking of time, maybe it’s time to take a step back and look at the bigger picture.  But wait, I’m going in a bit different direction with that thought.

A preview of sorts: I can certainly understand the convenience and comfort that can come from enjoying a newly released film in your own home. However, I prefer a movie experience in person. Yes, it's the larger screen but there's more to it too.

Long ago, a trip to see a moving picture might include getting dressed up, seeing a double feature and then going to the malt shop with a date.

That was then and this is now: The other day I went to a theater that I don't regularly visit. Unlike yesteryear, the tickets that day were planned by purchasing in advance with seats pre-selected. Unfortunately, there were technical issues on that particular screen at the multiplex so the performance was cancelled. I wasn't prepared for that so "time" opened up and so did additional possibilities.

Beyond the big picture It's something more than a larger screen. And it seems kindness can be a part of that. That disruption the other day might be considered a waste of time by some but it was also a chance to see kindness in action.

Each of us can do our part each day to behave better than yesterday. We can practice this towards each other as well as to ourselves. The power we have to be considerate or share a good word can be tested at times. If successfully examined, there can be many winners. And we can do it after the holiday season comes to an end.

Michael:

I don't even recall the last time I was in an actual movie theater...something to ponder - when, and what did I see? Same for having a malted!

But I'd rather ponder the possibilities of kindness throughout the year as  you suggested in your final paragraph. And what wonderful kindness quotes, thanks to Nina Hollander, Broker as a result of your post!

Michael, there are KIND people, and there are people who do KIND things.

a) NICE people are agreeable, helpful, and pleasing and do kind things and say kind words which can be "Temporary."

b) KIND people show caring--an act of kindness, which proceed from benevolence, and they are "Perpetual."

Which one describes us?

I can arrive at different conclusions depending on time, circumstances and situations.  It may not be scientific but that's my story and I'm sticking to it.  At least for now.  🤣

Michael Jacobs, precisely. When you're honest with yourself, it empowers you to cut through all the noises with confidence and pride, whether or not you succeed (and who determines success other than ourselves). It's the "quiet" strength that defines you.

I've come up with a new word to describe you as a result of Leanne Smith's comment.

Michael Jacobs - you're so humble. I can see why you wouldn't like the sound of "too official" and maybe "too political."

Honestly, it wouldn't make a difference to me what title your admirers give you. I still admire your work! 😃 And that's the truth!

And it definitely borders on distinguished and that's one description I usually stay far away.  In fact, it may be restricted territory for members like me.   🙃

Hi Michael,

It is a shame you couldn't see the movie presentation.  I remember getting to a theater late, and it was all sold out, so we had to make other plans.  That puts a wrench into the works.  But you are correct about being kind.  We can control that and we should always remember to be kind especially when it may seem hard.

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® - there are countless things that can go amiss in a day and likely a greater number of ways we can show kindness.  It is something where there can be an endless supply.  And it can be replaced with lots more of the same.

Hi Michael......kindness is a gift we give others and ourselves at the same time.  Yesterday while driving around we ran into what seems as a lot of road construction. We had to  merge left or merge right multiple times. It's always interesting how 'those' that don't seem to care that others merged as soon as they figured it out............and others fight there way up ahead of all of those people, pushing to the front of the line. Gary and I are ones that let people into traffic often. Those folks are grateful somebody wasn't in a RUSH to get nowhere fast!  LOL  And I always appreciate when people let me in - with a smile and a wave.  This is needed more than ever in our town.....as we've got a lot of crazy drivers right now for some reason. Too many accidents.....which in the last few days I saw 2 red light runners which caused sever damage to both cars not to mention the people. BE CAREFUL!

How I got off on this tangent who knows.......what I do know is KINDNESS goes a long way to bringing about a calming and peaceful place.

Anna Banana Kruchten Phoenix Broker - tangents can be detours that lead to a better place.  The example you cite is one common to our area too as it is to others, I am certain.

Hi Michael Jacobs It has been a while since I got to go to a theater to watch a movie on the Big Screen, so I don't miss standing in those long lines. One can enjoy a Big Screen at home with those 75-inch large screen TVs. Wouldn't it be wonderful to show kindness to everyone all year long?

Dec 15, 2022 10:36 AM

Jerry Newman - we have the opportunity to practice kindness each day. As for movie theater lines, some things from the past are missed more than others.  I can't say I miss those.

Michael Jacobs - I have been a physical movie goer as long as I can remember. Sunday afternoon was the day my parents took a rest and my siblings and I marched down the street to the triple features. Those were fun days.

Once I had a family and Blockbusters became a hit, I wasn't as fond of the experience as they were. For me, it created more of a kitchen duty and clean up gal. Pause or no pause, it wasn't as great to me as it was to the fam.

The last movie I went to see was When the Crawdads Sing. I will still go to the Movie Theater but not as frequently as I did before. So far, I haven't heard of any new movies in 2023 that interest me. I hope that changes. I do enjoy foreign movies and I don't know what's coming.

However, looking at the big picture I think many plans for my future will take precedent.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP - staying aware of the big picture while not ignoring the smaller details can be a bit of a challenge at times.  It's different than multi-tasking or juggling lots of possibilities.   However, I can see the comparisons as dominoes take their place as the game begins again.   What's next?  Hmm. . .

Dec 17, 2022 07:02 AM
Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP

Michael Jacobs - Indeed! Frequently, it is the smaller details that makes it harder to achieve the big picture.

The most recent movie I went to see was the new Top Gun movie. When we were exiting the theater the manager was handing out passes to see another movie because of a constant minor noise that was barley noticeable through out the film. Warehouse Cinemas is becoming more popular than the local Regal because of the acts of kindness and brew pub atmosphere.
