Friday Fun…Name Your Cookie!!!

Ohh…I love this time of year and one tradition that Larry and I both love…baking (and eating) Christmas cookies!!!

This week I made 2 dozen small Holiday Carrot-Raisin cakes that I’ve given out for over 30 years. When I began making them, they didn’t even have Cuisinarts so I had to shred the carrots using a cheese grater!

I know many of you don’t bake (yes, you Nina Hollander, Broker!!!) but I ask you..what is your favorite Christmas cookie(s)?

Me? I absolutely love Spritz cookies, Iced Sugar cookies, gingerbread cookies,  and Mexican Wedding Cookies.

As a kid, I left out a plate of cookies for Santa along with a calendar with my birthday circled on it. I have no idea why I did that but…I did.

In Delray Beach, a group of us had a cookie exchange party at the beginning of December. Two rules…they had to be homemade and NO chocolate chip cookies. One year, and I’m not kidding, we must have all been drunk when we made our batches because all of the different cookies were just awful!!!

Want to know what the Top Christmas Cookies are in your state??   (in Texas, it’s the classic sugar cookie!)

Or…how about the history and culture of the Christmas cookie?

Want some Christmas Cookie Recipe ideas??  Here are the 100 Best Christmas Cookie Recipes from the Food Network.

So come on…let us know what your favorite Christmas cookie is and share a photo of cookies you’ve made if you want!

The baking skills skipped my generation but lucking my mother and daughters partake.  Last night, we were treated to "snow balls"...  historically known as rum balls but somewhere along the way the rum disappeared (hmmm.... I need to go find that!).

Hi Brenda Mayette I remember having rum balls years ago!!! I may have to try making them.

Good morning Kathy,

I use to make Mexican wedding cakes but it's not my kids favorites so I've dropped making those. Growing up we did the Spritz cookies which I loved but the kids just can't get into them. We always do sugar cookies and let the kids decorate them!

Dorie Dillard Austin TX the Mexican wedding cookies and spritz cookies are our favorites. It's funny how the different generations like different cookies (and desserts.)

Hello Kathy - as for baking cookies, not so much (as in not at all, for me) but when it comes to choosing a favorite.  I say "yes, please" or "more".   Why choose a favorite.  I ask again.  Why indeed???

Hi Michael Jacobs I agree...why choose a favorite! I do love sugar cookies with icing  but I get bored putting the icing on.

Every year my friends would have a Christmas Cookie Party and it could not be store bought. The one person that did bring something from the grocery store brought chocolate chip!

Yum, yummy. Kathy Streib. I can taste your cookies right now. I love eating them this time of year, but I don't need to put on any more weight. I used to bake years ago when our daughter was growing up. My favorite are oatmeal cookies with raisins.

Kathy mine are rum ball cookies.  My wife makes fudge for Christmas and gives it to family and friends.  The list of who she gives it to keeps on getting longer and longer, because more people ask for it, and the kids of families she gives it to, ask for their own when they get to be older and go away to college.

George Souto I'll bet her fudge is really good!!!  I'm making it tomorrow but it's a pretty easy version.

Don't know if I will do any baking this year.  Dietary restrictions in my family have made it difficult.  I used to buy a box from my favorite bakery, but they closed down too.  Maybe I'll make some tea cakes, they don't have too much sugar in them.

Tammy Lankford, we give so many of them away because that way it spreads the calories and sugar. LOL

Hi Kathy,

I looked at the link for Mexican Wedding Cookies, which is my family's favorite.  My mother-in-law made them at Xmas.  She called them Italian Christmas cookies.  But I think it was a similar recipe.  I lost the recipe, so I might check this one out!

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® Larry  calls them Four O'Clocks!  I've heard them called another name but can't remember what. Give the recipe a try and if that doesn't work, text me and I'll shoot you the recipe I use.

I LOVE a good cookie just like the next guy, and I LOVE a beautifully presented, colorful plate of Christmas cookies. However, baking cookies at Christmas time just isn't a tradition in my family.

One year I remember making an assortment of cookies for a Christmas Eve I was hosting and I tried several new recipes...all turned out delicious and I've saved the recipes. But I have yet to ever make any of them again. HaHa.

I think all the work and expense and the fact they just aren't good for you (especially when you have a large quantity for so few people that gather in my family) it just isn't a priority.

Dec 16, 2022 03:04 PM

Sharon Tara I think I love giving them out to friends and family more than I do eating them!  A few and I'm done.

Kathy:

What a tasty post for the holidays!

It seems the Classic Peanut Butter Blossom cookies are a favorite of a number of states, including CA and FL!

My favorite are the German Honey Lebkuchen we make every year at Thanksgiving as a family - we still have part of a canister of them at our house - saving them for Christmas weekend!
