Since I first started blogging in 2008, people have asked me over the years "how are you so successful with blogging?" The answer is not all that simple, so allow me to explain a few things I've learned over the years that I find to be helpful.
First and foremost, what do you define as being “a successful blogger”? Is it the number of views? Is it the number of interactions? Perhaps it is the number of new friends or additional income your blogging has generated?
As I've frequently said over the years, the friendships and relationships I have developed on Active Rain and some other platforms where I push my blog posts out has been an unexpected and perhaps the most meaningful success of blogging for me personally. As far as interaction, I do communicate back and forth with a great many people on Linked In, Facebook and of course Active Rain. If you look at my number of views, I guess I am doing pretty well there too. Berkshire Hathaway Brokerage tracks the many different ways we reach the public, and in November it noted that I had written 17 blog posts on Active Rain, and I reached 2,746,472 people. To be accurate, I do push these same posts out to Twitter, Facebook & Linked-In as well. Quite impressive if you go by the numbers. I'd also add that November was probably one of my slower months when it came to writing blog posts.
Over the years, I have received and passed on a number of country-wide referrals. The majority of these were between Active Rain Members which provided me and the agent to whom I referred opportunities to list single family homes, duplexes, condominiums and Vacant Land in areas where we specialize. Naturally we always worked out fair referral fees, and it certainly is an added benefit to have this give and take and trust in one another.
With all this said, what should one NOT do is another great question. The answer is very easy - whatever you publish on the Internet about yourself make sure it is the real you. There are people who have what I call “an Internet persona”, yet if you come across them in real life, they seem to be completely different from what you have 'seen' online. In my case, you can bet you'll meet someone that is up for talking animals while enjoying a really good meal with a nice glass or two of wine to accompany the talk and the food. Simply put, what you 'see' of me on the Internet is what you will see of me in person.
Finally, I say be consistent with your blogging. Life is busy and while it may not be realistic to blog every day, at least do one or two blogs within a week's time. Like a successful author, find your niche time and set it aside for blogging, be it in the early morning hours or, if you are a night owl (like me) blog at night. I also like to blog when it's quiet - Diane is most definitely not a night owl so the later hours are pretty much all mine. Do not go in spurts - to be successful as a blogger look at it like a marathon vs. a sprint; the long haul will get you the benefits you are seeking.
