Tuesday's Treasures: making memories, consciously.

It's been another difficult Christmas (season) courtesy of COVID (aren't we all tired of these 5 letters?) and sky high airline tickets. I've been flying between Germany and the US for two decades now and have never seen prices as high as this time around. Craziness.

Christmas is just not the same when there's an ocean separating you from your closest family. Such is the life of an ex-pat. But, we are a resilient bunch and know how to improvise, how to find joy in the smallest moments, and how to turn things around... from a dreaded holiday to the most precious memories.

It's my lesson - once again - this year to shut down my laptop, to turn off my phone, and to enjoy the moment. Anything Real Estate had been dealt with, the blog and socials could wait a couple days. What could possibly be more important than a morning spent goofing off with the two most important people in my life, and my best bud Lennon?

After presents, coffee and hot chocolate, we dressed up for a very amateur photoshoot, and were laughing tears in the process. The end result, a budding photography talent, gorgeous pictures, and the most precious memories.

This. This is what Christmas is all about. My heart is still so full from these last 3 days (we celebrate Christmas from Dec. 24th through the 26th), it's sure to carry me through the end of this and well into the new year.

I don't do resolutions, but I do plan on being (much) more conscious again of all these little moments turned precious memories. It's the fabric of our lives. The blanket that warms our hearts, and the food our soul craves when there are bumps in the road.

Andrea Bedard Oh what a beautiful friend to spend a photo shoot with. I too shut it down. We need to spend quality time with the things that are special in our lives

Happy New Year Andrea 😊

I struggle with shutting things down for a bit Hannah Williams, I can definitely do better.

Wishing you a very happy new year, too!

Andrea, what fun, and they ARE really good photos!    These are the precious moments, and with your kids!   Nina has not been able to travel to see her extended family either.

My youngest is the budding photographer Joan Cox! She loved reading all the compliments on the pictures. It is really hard to spend to the most wonderful time of the year without family, that's the biggest negative of living life as an expat (there are many positives, too, though!).

HI Andrea- I love the photos!!!!  I am also very sorry that you were not able to spend it with the family you have in Germany. Learning to set your priorities, as you did, is so important. I had Christmas at my house this year and had to plan for 29+. I vowed to relish every moment and not worry about whether or not I was able to post or comment on the logs of others.

Thank you Kathy Streib! We usually have big family gatherings in GER as well, but this year half my family got COVID and had to spend Christmas in quarantine (thankfully at their homes). It's especially tough because my mom's birthday is Christmas day. I'm so glad that you had a full house! You'll cherish these memories forever.

I love this post and the photos - sometimes life throws curve balls and we have to adjust - being in the moment, wherever that is, is a great way to enjoy no matter what! Love this!

Yes, life does that. After two decades living the expat life, and being a single mom for almost as long, I know how to adjust! I have my moments, of course, but life is too precious to dwell over the things I cannot change. Thank you Kat Palmiotti
