Ban on Vicious Dogs?!?

Today when I was mowing a condo account I was talking to the President of their association and she told me that Grand Blanc Township (MI) just passed a new ordienance against vicious dogs. So I asked her what they were defining as vicious. "They aren't naming breeds that are banned, but I was told (by the township) that any breed that is known to be vicious is banned, because they said certain cultures take these dogs and use them for fighting and making them mean." I said looks like I won't be moving to G.B. then, my Chloey is half Pitbull, and you better believe I'd be going to jail if someone stepped foot on my property to take Chloey away from me because idiots (especially the media with misreporting of breeds) have ruined her breeds reputation!

To me it seems like they are making their own form of ban as we go B.S.L. and should be illegal if its not.

Pretty vicious huh? Don't ban the breeds, ban those that ruin the breeds! Its legal to own a handgun thats primary purpose is to kill but yet we ban family pets :-0

Banning breeds is ridiculous and inhumane...I agree.  Take the individual dog...I feel so badly for these misunderstood breeds...

What a sweetie pie!  Dogs are what we make them...usually!  We love them, they become loveable.  Sometimes animals, like people, can be brain damaged and then there's no telling how a dog (or person) acts.

We have had our county pass a ban on pit bulls and anything that even resembles a pit bull.  It is all based on fear, and the fear is fed by the media.

Chris:  Fear mongering is now the American way.  Get everyone all riled up about something they won't research on their own.  Ban dogs.  Sure.  Like that's solving anything.  Meanwhile, dog fighting should carry a much more severe penalty than anyone seems to be getting.  Michael Vick will probably end up back in the NFL one day, and celebs galore came to his defense.  There is no defense for torturing an animal.  It makes me sick.

Patrice- I totally agree, flat out rediculous! Pit bulls are extremely misunderstood.... They have been breed from origination to be human friendly! It actually takes a TON to turn these dogs vicious to humans, and they do not make good gaurd dogs other than because of the fear the media has put in peoples mind about this great breed.

Joan- Very true, however it does take more than just love, it takes proper training and socialization as well. My great aunt had a little Chiahaua that she absolutely loved and adored and it was the meanest little thing I ever met lol.

Barb- Are there any other breeds that are banned there or is it just the Pit bull? You are completely right, it is all out of fear from the media. People believe everything they hear in the media and automatically believe it to be true.... If the media was always so right why do they have retractions? lol Alot of the "pitbulls" in the media for being "bad" are not even pits!

Chris Ann- Yeah, what we don't know we automatically fear, and since the media says to fear these gentle giants many do. I know alot about this great breed because I had to do a report for my mom in order to get my 1st pitbull back when I was in High School. They are a great very friendly loyal passionate breed. They are also extremely loving and good with children, and can take alot without having to worry (although they should, just like all other breeds be properly trained and socialized).

I agree, dog fighting should be a federal felony with atleast a 10-20 yr minimum per dog. Also cracking down on dog fighting should be tightened up. You are totally right about Vick also, When he gets out, he will be back in the NFL if someone will take him, as he is still elligable to play per league rules which is why he ended up pleading guilty instead of fighting it and getting charged with the racketeering (which he should of been hit with anyways), because if he were even charged with the racketeering he would have been banned from the NFL, not to mention that carried (I believe) a 20 yr min. Carrying a concealed weapon is a 10 yr felony, racketeering is 20 yr felony, Vick got like 3 years and that was only because it was crossing state lines which made it a felony... had it only involved the area of his home and dogs from other states weren't brought in and he didn't buy/ sell dogs from other state it would have only been a state charge and in many areas it can be as little as a misdemeanor!
