Friday Fun…My Favorite Job

The other day, I had the chance to reminisce with a friend I used to work with. We talked about how much we learned there and how much fun we had.

We worked at a staffing office placing office support staff in companies large and small. My chief accounts were usually oil & gas, legal, and real estate companies.

This was not the first job for either of us and of course, it wasn’t the last. We loved what we did. Our owner, whom we all adored, was far ahead of his time in how he treated everyone as well as the direction he took the company.

I’ve had other jobs but this one spoiled me and set the bar for them all.

What about you?  Excluding what you’re doing now, what was your favorite job?

Favorite job, that is difficult to answer because as I have learned from each job, that learning has helped me in the next position. I believe being my own "boss" continues to be my favorite job whatever industry I am currently working within.

Leanne Smith that's partly why I loved the job I mentioned...I learned so much from what an office atmosphere can be like and still be productive.

My favorite job while going to graduate school in early 70's was working at night as a bus boy/dish washer at Dinty Moore's restaurant in Manhattan, NY across the street from Madison Square Garden. I loved my job which gave a chance to pay for my tuition at City College of NY, but also learn to speak American English and get to know and talk to people from different countries and cultures speaking different languages. The nights I didn't like much were when they had NBA NY Knicks games or boxing matches  featuring Mohamed Ali.

Hi Sham Reddy CRS that'was an excellent way to learn the language and culture here!!!  I'd imagine that the nights of the games the place was either super busy or dead as a doornail.

Hello Kathy - reminiscing can bring back fond memories.   For me, trying to recall a best job can be difficult.  There may be a lot of similarities in experience even when things couldn't be more different.

Maybe the message is to find joy (for lack of a better word) in the moment. I am thankful that I have found relationships and situations where such things happened and can continue to happen.

Michael Jacobs I was lucky to work where I did when I did. It allowed me to know how companies could be and still be productive.

I have found things to like in every job I've had and I can't pick a favorite! I did want to mention that leadership is everything! If someone feels valued, they'll stay. If they don't, they won't.

Kat Palmiotti I couldn't agree more. Our owner treated us all well and made us feel like we mattered.

Good morning Kathy,

I'm so glad you were able to meet with an old friend/colleague and were able to reminisce about your past work experience and how the owner you worked for set the bar for other employment opportunities. In thinking back I have to conclude my best work experience is my current one. Its the culmination of my talents and abilities and I thrive in the culture our leader has fostered.

Dorie Dillard Austin TX having read about your brokerage I can see why. The culture created is one where people want to come to work.

Hmm, I don't think I can truly say that I have ever loved any of my jobs, haha.  Some were more fun because of the people I got to be around on a daily basis though.

Brian England I actually loved staffing offices. It was fun finding the right fit for an applicant and for a company.

Good morning Kathy. The job I had at the time always seemed better than the job before. Currently my unpaid job as a babysitter for two young grandchildren may be the best of all. It would be even better if I got paid,, ha, ha! Enjoy your day.

My favorite job was as the Corporate Treasurer for M&M/Mars where I also wore a hat as the Director for North American Finance for Mars, Inc. Lots of first-class travel all over the world, visits to all the candy, pet food, ice cream and pet food factories. No one knows who good candy or ice cream is when it's fresh off the assembly line.

Kathy how fun that you two had a chance to talk about  the good ole job days!  It is fun looking back! Before RE I was designing homes and I loved decorating (still do) as well as re-doing a 1903 gorgeous home. I had one other job that was a blast right out of college as County Extension Agent in Vail CO.  That was wild....so many opportunities I couldn't even begin to count them all.  But I knew I wanted to get back into design...so I did when I moved to AZ.

Kathy, when you work for a company, it IS a joy to love what you do!    I had a boss at Safeway, (who I have written about here on AR), that I just loved.  After he retired, and years later when I left Safeway for real estate, we stayed in touch.  Went to dinner and lunch often, until he passed at 93 yo.

Hi Kathy:

Sounds like a great company culture and place to work!

I really enjoyed my last job in the corporate world as VP of Human Resources for a digital marketing company in Boston. I joined the company as the 6th employee and helped to grow the company to 106 employees in 3 cities - Boston, Atlanta and NYC. Sadly the company did not survive the Dot Com meltdown.

I think my favorite was my first. When I was just 15 I was riding in the car with my aunt and grandmother. I mentioned that it "must be fun to work there" as we passed a local sandwich shop. My grandmother told my aunt to turn around and she brought me in and asked for the owner. I don't think Bernie knew what hit him when my Nana told him he really should hire me. Such wonderful memories of working there...most of all meeting Rick who worked at the gas station across the street!

My first "job" was gathering mistletoe out of trees.  I made little bouquets out of it, and then sold it in front of our local post office during the holidays to make Christmas shopping money.  I was about 8 years old.
