Sunshine and cooler temperatures returned to Los Angeles, CA...

As sunshine has returned to Los Angeles, I had to reflect and enjoy the real sunshine vs. the liquid sunshine.

Most of you are familiar with the term “Texas- sized”? Well, if you are not, let me share, we consider this definition as ’bigger than anywhere else’. Now with that said we have had ‘Texas sized rain’ here in the Greater Los Angeles area for a while now. Most of us were thrilled to get the H2O.

Every time it rained, I would say to Diane: “Good for the grass, good for the citrus” this has been a standard bantering for the past seven or eight years. Needless to say, the past few years less than normal, due to the lack of rain.

As most of you know this year was an exception. We had over 18 inches of rain already. This past storm clearly set new records for precipitation in the Greater Los Angeles area. Keep in mind we are not done yet.  We just received a little respite.

Sadly, some of the negatives included damaged hillside homes and cars due to mudslides. This rain has caused negative side effects in the Hollywood Hills and other hillside communities as well.

When we bought our home, there were no gutters on them, not all homes in Los Angeles have rain gutters. I insisted and made sure one of the first of many improvements to our home, were the rain gutters. Now with that said our gutters have gotten a workout this Winter.

Most of you know that rain gutters are necessary to prevent damaging the walls and directing the water away from the foundation.

The unexpected  positive side effect of all this rain for us has been, as I have been saying for years, the rain has been beneficial for our citrus. Well, look at the size of this lemon. As you can see ‘Texas-sized’, compared to the normal sized lemons.

So with that said I am grateful for the rain and that our gutters stood up to the task of handling all the rain. Needless to say I am equally grateful for the added benefit it had on our Citrus trees.

That's excellent news about the citrus! I was wondering if they were going to be negatively impacted by the cooler temperatures but it appears they are just fine!

I just noticed that they have given a warning about how cold it will be in Goodyear the next few days and now I am worried about my lemon bush as we are out of town.  I save my old fashioned Christmas lights for just such an emergency.  I will need Santa Claus to put them up for me, though.  😉

Hi Endre... that is one big lemon! Wow! You were so smart to put on those gutters. We've had a rainier winter here than normal (nothing like your 18 inches), but I'm ready for it to wind down.

Hello Endre Barath, Jr. .  I have a friend in Redding Cal area and said the reservoirs where brought up above their record lows.  I know flooding often times does not translate to filled water basins.  How is it doing in the LA area?  mdm

Endre, are you sure that is a lemon and not a grapefruit? It is definitely Texas sized! Hopefully you will have a few days to dry out before the next rainfall. We are around 80* but expect rain tonight then highs around 70* the rest of the week.

Endre, "Texas Size" would be an understatement.  The rain you guys have been getting is more like "Noah Size Rain".  ☺️

Wow Endre Barath, Jr. that Texas Sized lemon looks more like a grapefruit!  We too have had a lot of rain, not nearly as much as you guys had but a lot.  And gutters OMG we learned early on when we moved into our home just how important gutters are - especially during monsoon season.  We have a very high back roof and it was so weird -looking out back we were getting flooded out and you couldn't even tell we had a pool. No kidding.  Look out front - it was all quiet on the western front! We put in an extensive gutter system and have not had a flooding issue since.  God willing we never will again.  Pretty crazy, isn't it! Weather can wreak havoc! And....grow big lemons!

Mark Don McInnes, Sandpoint-Idaho  not sure about the question, years ago I read something that they were 40-50% contaminated.... Diane has been giving bottled water to all our pets and herself.... and I only drink Pellegrino.... so with that said need to read up on it and let you know, Endre

Diana Zaccaro Broker Associate  very funny, since we had the house about eight years or so never got one this size, keep in mind we were on water conservation for a while now.... so the 18 inches of rain clearly was helpful to our Tangerine tree and the other citrus too. Endre

We had a simply gorgeous day yesterday and it rained all day today today - certainly nothing like what you all have had, Endre! I also say, it's great for the grass & the garden!

And, that's one enormous-sized lemon - HOLY GUACAMOLE! It looks to be the size of a grapefruit. WOWZA!

Endre:

That's definitely a mega-lemon!

Yes the rain has, overall, been a good thing but with a mixed blessing with the mudslides, downed trees, flooding, and damaged homes, cars, and sadly some deaths.
