Many of you remember the Mel Gibson movie, "The Patriot," from a few years ago. Most of that movie was filmed right here in York and Chester Counties, SC. Everyone was excited having Mel Gibson, Heath Ledger , etc. in this area for such an extended time. In York County the movie set was in McConnells at a historic site known as Historic Brattonsville. The movie used many of the buildings on the site and filmed parts of a battle scene in an adjacent pasture. That was quite a sight...There was actually a Revolutionary War battle there known locally as the Battle of Huck's defeat. The York County Cultural and Heritage Museums do a nice job with Historic Brattonsville. I am including a link to their site so that more people can take advantage of a nicely done, historically accurate place. Throughout the year they hold seasonal events and July is no exception. Next weekend, July 12-13 they will host many re-enactors and will reenact the Battle of Huck's Defeat. The entire weekend will feature the British and Patriot camps, cooking, crafts, and a peek into the life of the fledgling Americans in the mid to late 1700's. Of course, the area also celebrates the 4th with the traditional fireworks and parades. The Herald, the Rock Hill newspaper listed 6 fireworks shows and 5 parades including a boat parade on Lake Wylie. Charlotte also has a large fireworks show and many Independence Day events. I always enjoy the July 4th fireworks at Knights Stadium after the Charlotte AAA Baseball game. There just seems to be something American about enjoying baseball, singing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" and then enjoying fireworks and patriotic music. I hope you can join us.
