A Gist of Grit. . .

A Gist of Grit. . .

I recently put aside a book. I had finished reading it but wasn’t exactly through with it.  Maybe you know what I mean - maybe not.  Some things stay with me.

I read a lot.  This and that. Admittedly, I sometimes skim - skipping through a story.  I certainly miss things.

I also return to re-read.  Review.  In part. And then some. This time, the book Grit The Power of Passion and Perseverance written by Angela Duckworth captured my attention.  Aura Alex first mentioned it in a post written in December.

I commented then that her post prompted me to reserve a copy from my local library. The book shares examples of grit as well as thoughts behind the trait. While informative, there was still much to make me think. That seems always to be the case for me even as I attempt to avoid always and never.

PS: There is a Ted Talk presentation too. It's also very good. And after all, each of us absorbs information in different ways.

Hi Michael... if you read the "basic" definition of grit, you know if you have it. Now you've got me thinking about ordering this book. As for the use of words like always and never... I'm always telling people not to say never or always unless they mean longer than 100 years.

Nina Hollander, Broker - I seem to always get stuck in some way whenever I choose to use never.  Or always for the matter.  It's a conundrum - another favorite word.

Joan Cox - I "catch" myself using the words "always" and "never" a lot.  My fumbles and overall clumsiness deserve more than a few penalties.  Now is that a situation of mixed metaphors or some other odd sports reference I should avoid?

Good morning Michael,

I remember Aura Alex mentioning the Angela Duckworth book in her December post. I even  thought about downloading that book on my Kindle and now that you took the time to retrieve this book, I may have to make it a reality!  I've learn to  avoid the two words: always and never. You just never know what might occur, things change, time changes and perspective changes.

Thank you, Dorie Dillard Austin TX, for the mention. It's the kind of book I keep going back and reading again.

"... I'll get back up. I may not be the smartest person in the room, but I'll strive to be the grittiest." - Angela Duckworth.

Hi, Michael. Thank you for the mention of my post that led you to read the book about Grit. I am a TedTalk subscriber, and I listened to Angela Duckworth talk before learning about her book.

Her passionate storytelling writing style resonated with me as I recall some of my conversations with my father before my trip to the US. He was worried about how I would survive in a foreign land when all I had was my passion. When I went home after college, my father didn't question me about how I came through; he just said, "I'm proud of  you." Duckworth's father said the same to his daughter!

Aura Alex - I remember the experience Duckworth mentioned about her father.  Some of the other examples in her book are memorable as well.  The Ted Talk which I saw after reading the book is a good accompaniment.

Hi Michael,
I need to add this book to my list. I wonder if it's on Audible. I'll check. It should be a good road trip listen.  I enjoyed the TedTalk and will say some of my greatest lessons (and successes) have come from failing. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Michael now you've got me pondering - again!  For years I was a voracious reader, probably since grade school. Enter in the blogging age and the reading continued, just in a different form.  I do miss reading.books so much- kind of.  I am also excited about listening to the TED talk you suggested.  Good Sunday Afternoon! Hi again Michael I just had time to watch her TedTalk. Love it.  As a teacher of kids (and adults) I could so relate to those that simply have that tenacious GRIT and those that just don't or don't seem all that interested(for whatever reason). My goal was to find a way to inspire them, to in a way, teach them about the 'why' of figuring things out and sticking to them is such a cool thing.  Make it fun for them.  I generally had good results with making things fun and group involvement.  It will be fun to watch more about what Angela learns along her GRIT journey with kids!

It seems like reading a good book is just the beginning.  I was just re-reading a section of Tipping Point, by Malcolm Gladwell, last night.  I was trying to firm up a post that I want to make for this month's challenge.  The problem may be that I have remembered that section incorrectly.  We will see if I can overcome the obstacle.

Brian England cracks me up.  At least he didn't add some silly #, like #NoPickleballForBrian.  That would be unfortunate.  😉

Ray Henson - I remember reading that Gladwell book.  He is known to me as an author who presents more than a few obstacles along the way to fully understanding.  Good luck with your post - it's an opinion after all, an impression of what the book meant to you.

For some reason, I really like his style, Michael Jacobs.  Maybe it is because he does leave a few obstacles along the way.  I was recently on a long flight and watched all his master classes on writing.  It would put many people to sleep, but I really enjoyed it.  It made the flight go by quickly.  The ironic thing is that I find myself viewing the world in a very different way than he does.  Funny how that works.
