Motivational Monday ~ Become A Cycle Breaker

I don’t know if you know about Maria Shriver’s Sunday paper but I’ve subscribed for a couple of months now and Sunday January 29th her Essay really struck a chord with me.

She talked about the past weeks horrific 2 different CA shootings and the Memphis police savage beating of 29 year old Tyre Nichols. Many of you I'm sure watched the video. His mom didn’t want to see the city burn or for people to be hurt in her son’s honor. She wants justice for her son, but is praying for the police officers and their families.

What struck a chord with me in Maria’s essay was her recommendation for us to commit to become cycle breakers and for each of us to take one small step forward to commit, in our own way, to break the cycle of senseless violence in our nation. We need pattern disrupters and there are plenty of us out there. Finding the courage to step forward and say “No there is a different way forward,” is possible!

Her statement is so true: “We can’t move forward in our lives, in our families, or in society unless we see the patterns, acknowledge them in our hearts and minds, and use our voices to commit to change. We must set out to make our actions match our intentions.

“When patterns are broken, new worlds emerge.” Tuli Kepferberg

Hi Dorie,
I absolutely agree. Sadly, however, there is a segment of the population that is always looking for an excuse to be violent and destroy property. It would be nice if that cycle could change!

hI Dorie- I too will check this out. When I was in grad school and learning about behaviorism, what struck me was that it was not enough to try to change someone's mind. It was through a change in behavior that change can come about. Saying that we need to come together is not enough. Each one of us can change our behavior...how we reach to others and how we react to those whose behavior is unacceptable.

Hi Carol Williams you are right there is a segment of the population fixated on violence and destruction. These are the people that need to be reached the most to break their behavior.

Good stuff Kathy Streib in exploring behaviorism. You are so right its not as much about changing  minds (for some that may never change) but its changing behavior and how to react when you don't like what you are seeing and hearing.

For the way that poor man was brutalized, the justice that needs to be given should be well reported. Buring down the town will do nothing for that man and justice will prevail especially if those officers get prison time.

I love the idea of this, Dorie.  I wish we had more enlightened souls to instruct us on how to truly go about that.  How do we reason with unreasonable people to do something different than what they are doing?  The last few days (and beyond), have provided horrific examples of what needs to change.

Dorie the more God is taken out of schools, the work place, and our communities, the more it seems senseless actions like this take place.  We can't let actions like this dictate what we do and behave.  Good can win over evil.

Good morning Dorie. Reminds me of "I don't fix problems. - I change my thinking - The problems solve themselves" Why can't we break the cycle? Enjoy your day.

We also can't let senseless acts of violence by individual people cause us to consider all others who are like them in race, occupation, etc. to be responsible for their acts.

It is so sad to see and hear some of the atrocious happenings these days. Social media and daily news brings us more than we want to know. Yet, not knowing about these things would not make them go away. We must have change for the better.

I love the term "cycle breaker" ... no matter what the issue ... I think of something my mother always said "two wrongs never make a right" ... stand up for those who are being harmed and do no harm -- 😇
