Groundhog Day In Arizona

Groundhog Day In Arizona

What Does Groundhog Day Mean To Me and Other Zonies

When you live in Arizona, for that matter any sunbelt state, you really don't think of winter the same way as others who live in colder climates.  I am very thankful for our moderate winter temps.

But there is a special significance to Groundhog Day.  We are halfway to spring. Yea!  Also, Valentine's Day is coming up and the days are starting to get more daylight.  I was in the garden this morning and I could see signs of spring in the air.

It will be 75º at the Superbowl in Glendale AZ, just ten days from now.

This year it has been a little colder than normal.  In fact, I can't ever remember when snow on the ground lasted more than a few days. Normally, if it snows in the morning it is gone by the afternoon!  This last group of storms saw snow on the ground for two weeks straight.

Snow in Soldiers Pass on Jan 23 - 2023

We finally got a little rain at the end of January and it washed all the remaining snow away.  This is the view out my bedroom window back on January 23rd.

Decided to leave on January 30th!!

Of course, I will take this view every day of the week.

I love the Movie Groundhog Day.  I can see it over and over and over!

Happy Groundhog Day!

Good morning, Sheri... I could go for some 75 degree days. It hasn't been all that cold here in Charlotte this winter... but it's been rainy so it's felt cold and damp. I'm certainly ready for spring!

Hi Ray Henson,

There is nothing like Arizona weather.  Some people don't enjoy the dry weather but I love it and there is nothing better than pushing 300 days of vitamin D! Happy Friday!

Hi Dorie Dillard Austin TX - Our local news has been covering that storm.  They said it finally moved out of Texas yesterday.  I was thinking of you.  I have never been through an ice storm but have heard that it is the most devastating winter storm you can get.  I am glad that the conditions are getting back to normal.  Here is to 70º!!

Wow Sheri that is unusual for Sedona to have snow on the ground for 2 weeks!  It sure does look pretty!  Personally I look forward to our 70+ degree weather for now in PHX.  We have so many big events going on here for the next several months it's going to be busy is my area.  Enjoy today!

We are experiencing a very cold and windy day in Maryland. Thankfully, the sun is shining and we have no snow.

Hi Endre Barath, Jr.,

I certainly get it.  Our family has relatives in Nebraska and Chicago.  I have had many clients who come from cold climates and never want to see snow again.  I remember the snow-capped San Gabriel or San Bernardino mountains and how beautiful they are.

I have known Sedona agents who will not display images of snow at all.  I won't do that.  I showcase all of Sedona for what it is. Personally, I have never heard anyone who lives here take issue with our snow because it goes away quickly.

Hi Kat Palmiotti - So true.  It is out of character for our area.  But it is not a hassle either.  It only lingers in the shade.

Hi Anna Banana Kruchten Phoenix Broker - It is busy.  We have friends volunteering for Superbowl.  My head was spinning when they talked about the schedule.

Half the local news is about the Phoenix Open, Barrett Jackson, The Superbowl Experience, etc.!  They said that the Phoenix Open brings in about over $500 million without the Superbowl!  We love Phoenix/Scottsdale ...all year long.

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® What are your friends volunteering to do at the Super Bowl?  That sounds like fun!  The whole 'experience' as they call it starts this weekend. All kinds of events going on all weekend to jazz up the super bowl 'experience'.  Gary had a great time at the Barrett-Jackson and we may go out to another auction in Fountain Hills tomorrow.  So, so so much going on - we'll see!

Hi Roy,

If the sun is shinning and there is no snow, that is a good thing.  Stay warm!

Hi Michael Jacobs - I remember getting our "taste" of the seasons by visiting the mountains.  I don't think many SoCal residents will disagree with you and Endre.

You had me laughing Brian England.  We used to go to Maui every February, and if a "cold" front came in where it was low 60ºs, you could determine where people were from by the way they dressed.  Locals had winter jackets on, California and Arizona visitors had sweaters and people from cold climates were in shorts and t-shirts!

Hi Nina Hollander, Broker -  We won't see more than a couple of days in the 70ºs if any at all in February.  But I agree with you, I am ready for spring!  One thing I have noticed about having defined seasons, something that we really didn't experience in SoCal, is that you are usually ready for the next season and you appreciate each upcoming season more.

As always, Sheri, your photos are stunning. If you remember February in Houston, then you know it can be overcast, cold, rainy and dreary. Today is the first day we've seen the sun in what seems like a week.

Sheri & Rick, that does look a snowy and cold back yard!   Mother Nature does her thing, and forecasters can usually not get it right.

Hi Sheri:

I missed this on Groundhog Day but had to chuckle at your opening line about winters for those of us in warmer climates. No snow to worry about here, but it has been chilly - low 50s at best during the day, low 40s at night - and I'm looking forward forward to warmer weather, especially during the day.

The leaves are popping on the trees and there are some beautiful white blooming trees that always remind me of Spring in Boston.

Jeff
