I was talking to other REALTORS lately when this question was brought up, and have to say, I have not kept accurate records. I think NAR says 10 years is now the average most homeowners stay in their homes.
With properties I have sold over the last few years, many sold very quickly, some after 1 or 2 years. It was due to death, divorce, or transferring out of state, and one met the man of her dreams and married. They bought a home together.
It was interesting looking back through the records to see the years in the homes! It sure bounces around every year!
For 2022 - it ranged from 4 years to 18 years - averaging 7 years
For 2021 - it ranged from 1 year to 40 years - averaging 20 years
For 2020 - it ranged from 3 years to 4 years - averaging 3.5 years (I had two first-time buyers and two relocation buyers also)
For 2019 - it ranged from 2 years to 29 years - averaging 12.5 years
For 2018 - it ranged from 1 year to 25 years - averaging 6.5 years (two sellers sold after only 1 year)
Looking through my database, there are many who have bought a home, and have stayed and stayed! They have done updates and complete remodels, but enjoy their home and the neighborhood.
What is the average your clients have stayed in their homes?
