It’s amazing the US 183 North Construction started January 26, 2022 and is already 24% complete. However, there is a long way to go to completion in 2026. Drivers can continue to expect lane closures, increased construction on additional lane closures, sidewalks, bridge widening and ramp work needed to connect with MoPac.
This is a $612 million project covering 9 miles on US 183 between 45N/RM 620 and Mopac. There are two new toll express lanes and a fourth continuous non-toll lane in each direction being added.
They are adding and improving sidewalks and bicycle lanes along service roads and adding bike lanes along the US 183 North corridor.
For those of us living in Northwest Austin this project addresses the traffic congestion and ultimately is expected to keep traffic flowing at peak times in the 183 North corridor. The express lanes existing on MoPac and 183A Toll in Cedar Park will now connect to the added express lanes, allowing quicker access for commuters. Capital metro buses will be allowed free access and emergency vehicles should be able to respond in less time.
The project is a big undertaking and one we needed to address years ago. Its better late than never! It will be an inconvenience for the next 3+ years so plan extra time when navigating US 183, while it’s under construction. When done it should have a huge impact on mobility and relief of congestion. We will have options of different ways of getting around, its just going to take time and could take longer than expected. We will all need to practice patience.
