Scottsdale Bicyclists Guide

A Guide to Exploring the Sonoran Desert on Two Wheels

Scottsdale, Arizona is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts and cyclists, offering a diverse range of scenic routes through the beautiful Sonoran Desert. With its warm climate, clear skies, and stunning natural beauty, Scottsdale is the perfect place to explore by bicycle. Whether you're a seasoned cyclist or a beginner looking to try something new, this guide will provide you with everything you need to know to make the most of your cycling experience in Scottsdale.

Getting Started on Your Scottsdale Bicycle Adventure

Before you hit the road, it's important to have the right gear and equipment. A high-quality bike is essential, and there are several bike sales and rental shops in Scottsdale that can help you find the perfect ride. You'll also want to invest in a good helmet, a water bottle, and a repair kit (thorn-proof tires are a big plus), as well as comfortable clothing that can handle the desert heat. Sunscreen and sunglasses are essential items to bring along, as you'll be exposed to the sun for long periods of time.

Scottsdale Bicycle Routes and Trails

Scottsdale offers a variety of routes and trails for cyclists of all skill levels. The city's extensive trail system makes it easy to find a ride that suits your interests and abilities. Some popular options include:

The Scottsdale Greenbelt (including the Indian Bend Wash) is a 20-mile trail that winds through the McCormick Ranch Area (begins at 92nd Street and Shea Blvd), the heart of Scottsdale, South Scottsdale and all the way into Tempe.  This route ends at Tempe Beach Park. The paved path is perfect for a leisurely ride and offers stunning views of the city and the surrounding desert.  Be cautious of congested areas such as around Lake Marguerite in McCormick Ranch. During much of the ride there will be pedestrians and many dog walkers (I'm in that category many mornings each week :-)

The McDowell Sonoran Preserve in North Scottsdale is a vast desert park that covers more than 30,000 acres. This area is a haven for cyclists, with miles of trails that range from easy to challenging. You'll encounter everything from rolling hills to rocky terrain as you explore the preserve.

The Pima Road Loop is a popular road ride that takes you through some of Scottsdale's most scenic areas. This 25-mile route offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, and is perfect for intermediate to advanced riders.

The Tonto National Forest is a vast wilderness area that's just a short drive from Scottsdale (just north of the city limits). This area offers a variety of trails for mountain bikers, from easy rides through scenic valleys to challenging climbs up steep mountainsides.

Scottsdale Bicyclists Safety and Etiquette

Safety is always a top priority when cycling in Scottsdale, and it's important to be aware of the rules of the road and to follow proper cycling etiquette. Always obey traffic signals and signs. If you're riding in a group, be mindful of other cyclists and vehicles, and ride in a single file line.  There are many Bicycle Clubs (Groups) in Scottsdale.  I'm sure you can easily find one that matches your style if you research this online.

When cycling in the desert, it's also important to be prepared for the heat. Drink plenty of water, and take breaks as needed to avoid dehydration. Avoid riding during the hottest part of the day, typically between 11am and 3pm, and always wear sunscreen.

Finally, be respectful of the environment and Leave No Trace. Stay on designated trails, and avoid riding through sensitive habitats and wildlife areas.

Conclusion

Scottsdale is a wonderful place to explore by bicycle, offering a range of routes and trails that cater to riders of all skill levels. Whether you're a seasoned cyclist or just starting out, you're sure to find a ride that suits your interests and abilities. With its warm climate, stunning natural beauty, and welcoming community, Scottsdale is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and experience the thrill of the open road. Have fun, grab your bike and head out to the stunning Sonoran desert today!
