Paying Attention to Move Toward Intention

Let's take a look at these two words, attention & intention:

Attention - notice taken of someone or something. Regarding something or someone that is interesting or important. Here, the meaning is something that is happening right now.

Intention - a thing intended, an aim, or a plan. This would be something aimed at the future.

The word, "intention" has become somewhat of a buzzword of late. Everyone is using this term to discuss their "intention" to do this or that. We can all, "intend" to do things but it will take action in order to make that happen.

Whatever you "intend" to do in life requires a plan of action. And then, a good plan means paying attention to the details so you can execute and achieve the goals you have set. When we pay attention and make a plan, then our intentions can be achieved.

Intention without action is simply wishful thinking. While wishful thinking can make us feel great, only the action of completing a project, reaching a goal, or achieving a new threshold will fulfill the original intent. So get busy paying attention to a plan that will help you achieve your desired intention.

This sounds like it should be simple, right? It's amazing, however, that many simply want to skip the all-important "action" phase. Remember the phrase, "you snooze, you lose."? That is what will happen with even the best of intentions!

Hello Paula - consequences whether they be intentional as well as unintentional are a part of the landscape (mindscape too) of everyday life.  How we adjust/adapt to them can speak volumes.

Attention is a more action word of setting a plan and creating action to accomplish something.

Intention seems to be more passive, such as thinking about doing something.

Paula, interesting.  Have not been aware of the new 'buzzword'.  Sounds a bit like a sugarcoated word for goal and also gives an easier way out for the intender.  There is a huge gap between intentions/goals and actions.  Many never fulfil the path.  Mark

very true .. and it seems harder than ever to pay full attention as there are a million things pulling our attention in various directions. It takes discipline!

Paula to me intention is not a new buzzword.  We used INTENTION quite often back in the 90's while teaching and giving leadership seminars.  And absolutely there needs to be a plan of action along with that intention!  JDI   Just Do It!

There is no easy button Dr. Paula McDonald - success is built on having a plan, taking action, focusing, attention to the details, and having the intention of reaching or exceeding our goals.  It is not easy. It takes work and dedication.
